Japan's Initiative about Clean Water and Sanitation
The country my report is based on is japan. Japan considers $8.6 billion U.N pledge to support the UN SDG. The country has actively trying to achieve the 17 UN SGD goals such as clean water and sanitation and addressing climate change. Before the 2030 Agenda. The country was already implementing ideas and measures to build a sustainable future. The country played a huge role in the idea of 2030 Agenda. Japan is aiming to become a role model for the other countries in the plan and actions japan is taking for Agenda 2030. Japan also has plans to work with other countries to achieve a sustainable future. Japan believes to nurture in children who are the future of this planet, Japan actively talking and encouraging about SDG and The future of the planet in schools and local communities. Japan actively contributes to various talks about even before the other countries get to it. The country believes that clean water and sanitation is a very important vision. Today nearly one-third of the world’s population lives with water that is a threat to human health and agriculture. More than one billion people do not have access to safe clean drinking water.
As early as June 2001, japan prime minister Koizumi and USA president bush have a partnership to tackle global issues and On 2002 japan and the United States have launched the “clean water for people” Initiative. It is a partnership to improve the freshwater resources. Japan aims to continue improving access to safe drinking water.
Japan has identified the major challenges that is to be addressed. Some of the major challenges are Health, gender equality, and disaster risk reduction. Japan has supported countries seeking to achieve UHC in various ways, including the development of human resources and the strengthening of primary health care coverage. Japan has promoted a cross-sectoral approach, combining health development with nutrition, water, and sanitation(H.E. Mr. Shinzo Abe 23/08/2019) Japan feels that public awareness of SGDs is not enough so japan is working hard in spreading awareness through communication campaigns
Japan Has taken many initiatives has implemented to achieve the vision. WaterAid Japan is one of them. It is currently the largest water and sanitation donor in the world. They are actively building the nation and international partnerships. Japan is the world largest donor in the water and sanitation sector.
In March 2006 Japan announced Water and sanitation board partnership initiative(WASABI). IN 2004 Japan ministry of health, labor and welfare show a map towards the future goal. Its is to increase energy efficiency and to reduce water leakage and review the subsidy system “without charging more than the usual rates for water In 2002 people that were connected to the sewer choose to opt for their wastewater to be treated through small-scale wastewater treatment. Called jokasos. The treated water can be used for multiple things like for example car washing, toilet flushing and watering the plants. JICA(japan international cooperation Agency) has supported many countries for the wss service. Sri Lanka is one of the countries and Sri Lanka has made amazing achievements in the water and sanitation sector. The country is one of the three South Asian countries to have met the water and sanitation MDG(millennium development goal) JICA has cover project support to urban and rural water supply, wastewater collection and sanitation. “Japan is willing to assist countries and people around the world.”(Prime Minister Abe,2015).
Japan’s initiative consists of multiple components:
- In a country or region where water supply coverage is lower than japan will focus on the sustainable supply of drink water
- In a country or region where water coverage is higher, japan will support to build water resources
- In populated urban areas, japan will support their development
