It Happened in Georgia: Following the Development of Georgia's History
It Happened in Georgia by James A. Crutchfield is a nonfiction book about the historical events that took place in the state of Georgia. The book is basically an overview of the history that lies within the borders of Georgia. All the events in the book take place in Georgia ranging from the 1500's to the year 1996. The book begins with the discussion of the decline of the Ocmulgee tribe in Macon, Georgia at the time. The book covers events such as the death of the 32nd president Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Union General William T. Sherman's march to sea, and Hank Aaron's record breaking home run. It also talks about the most wanted man in America, who was the 'fallen confederate president' Jefferson Davis (Crutchfield, 64).
He was captured near 'Irwinville, Georgia' on May 10, 1865 (Crutchfield, 64). The book also discusses Georgia's involvement with the Trail of Tears, the 'Cherokee Indians' were removed from 'Cedartown' where they were living at the time (Crutchfield, 36). Finally, the book ends with the most recent and most tragic event in Georgia history, which was the bombing at the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta, Georgia. It was a terrorist attack and 2 people died, 'one from a heart attack', the terrorist used pipe bombs to carry out the attack. Other historical events are discussed as well; but the first event was the descend of the Ocmulgee tribe, and last event that was discussed was the 'tragic bombing' at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta (Crutchfield, 123). The book was basically written to emphasize the important things in history that took place in the state of Georgia. The Trail of Tears was an event that I would consider was associated with Georgia, because only began in Georgia. They started walking west but that did not include Georgia after they left its border. Therefore, I would say that this event ties in with United States History more. Although, it would still be considered an event in Georgia history as well. The Trail of tears was basically the removal of the Native Americans from there land, so they had to relocate west.
President Andrew Jackson during the time passed the 'Indian Removal Act', which stated that for exchange for the Indian land in the east, the Native Americans could have the land in the west. In conclusion, I am just saying that the Trail of Tears is the only event in the book that only started in Georgia, it did not end there. Another event that I found very interesting was the 'Most Wanted Man in America', who turned out to be Jefferson Davis who was the president of the Confederate. After his imprisonment at Fort Monroe, Virginia on May 10, 1865 for two years. He was even put in jail without having a trial for the treason that he was convicted of. However, he was released on bond in 1867; but I feel like Jefferson Davis was innocent all along. He was never given a trial therefore how could he be found guilty without any evidence. Jefferson Davis basically was imprisoned because of theories and conspiracies against him, because it was never proven that he committed treason to this day.
However, it could be the other way around; maybe the government was threatened to not trial Davis. It is still unknown, but I believe they're was a conspiracy behind it. The Book It Happened in Georgia by James Crutchfield relates to United States History very well. To begin with, the book covers every major historical event to ever take place in Georgia, which is a part of the United States. The book discusses presidents of the United States, such as Franklin Roosevelt; these presidents were the leaders of the United States for a period. The biggest comparison would be the Trail of Tears, because it took place in Georgia, but it is also a major United States historical event that took place. The book covers the topic Georgia history which is a part of United States history. Therefore, my book relates to United States history without a doubt. I really enjoyed the book It Happened in Georgia because it gave me a breakdown of all the events that happened in Georgia history. Most of the events were not very positive, but it was still very educational.
