In the movie ‘Bodega Down Bronx’, they have shown that socioeconomic status plays a major role in making food choices. People in the Bronx avoid buying fresh fruits and vegetables because at the same price they can get one whole meal. Due to low socioeconomic status people thinks of buying cheaper food without knowing whether it’s healthy or not. The Bronx has the most astounding rate of hunger in the country. It is identified as a food desert, lacking access to healthy foods, an absurdity given the close proximity of such a huge market. With a huge populace of Latinos and African Americans, a high neediness rate, an absence of reasonableness, sound nourishments have hugely affected the personal satisfaction for the occupants, causing weight and absence of sustenance in families and adolescents. Because of their low-wage status, Bodegas tend to stock a lot of cheap and greasy, unfortunate sustenance things. Due to their popularity and shelf stability, these items are more profitable for bodegas than more healthier alternatives like organic fruits and vegetables. Unsurprisingly, purchases at these stores frequently consist of unhealthy snacks like potato chips, pastries, and sugar-sweetened drinks. The people living in that area suffers from a lack of knowledge about their surroundings and most importantly lack the sense of health.

Regardless of the fact that a large portion of the individual food items purchased was classified as unhealthy, 59% of customers revealed their purchases as healthy, showing lack of knowledge. People like them simply rely on a single thinking that is how to make quick money and when and where to spend it without thinking twice. Bodegas should help spread more awareness about organic fruits and vegetables by selling them at a lower cost, which will help their surroundings, people living in the Bronx to have and improve their healthy choices. Bodegas should also stick posters of healthy foods habits and their benefits that can be achieved by buying from their stores, which will help the people to gain knowledge of making healthy choices. There are initiatives for the bodegas that are made by the New York City Health Department to boost the availability and demand for healthy foods like fruits and vegetables in their neighborhood, especially in low-income areas like South Bronx, North and Central Brooklyn, and East and Central Harlem. It will also help to reduce many medical conditions, one of them is obesity which is on the high rise.

Access to different kinds of food stores is mainly affected by the geographic area of the neighborhood and decides the kind of food that will be offered at accessible food stores and the amount it will cost. By looking for similar topics and doing more research we can see that people living in the Bronx area are still illiterate about the fact that healthy living is a good living. Their socio-economic status also plays a major role, where they are bound to make choices between cheap fast food option and organic fruits and vegetables available to them in stores like Bodega. Government and stores like bodega should accomplice with each other and help their society move to healthy and good living style by selling organic food at a low price depending upon the economic status of their target customers living in those areas.
