Hunger Games: The Emotional Journey of Survivors

“May the odds be ever in your favour.” After the 74th Hunger Games, in which Katniss Everdeen & Peeta Mellark survived, a rebellion starts to arise in the public. The people thought Katniss did her trick with the berries the year before to show that she doesn’t agree with the methods in the Capitol, and a mutiny is starting to rise. When Katniss and Peeta are on their Victory Tour of the 74th Hunger Games, the uprising is happening right before their eyes and President Snow isn’t happy with Katniss. He wants her to stop the rebellions, by showing that the Capitol is “good”. When it is announced that for the 75th Hunger Games, the 3rd Quarter Quell, the tributes will be chosen among previous winners, Katniss, Peeta and Haymitch are furious.

After the selection, Katniss and Peeta know they’ll have to survive this once more, but how? At the beginning of training, Katniss doesn’t want any allies. However, Haymitch (as their mentor) has arranged that Finnick Odair & Mags from District 4 will be allied with Katniss & Peeta once the Games begin. Together they survive for quite a long time, but unfortunately, they have to let go of Mags. Later on in the Games, they get more allies and they now have quite a big group. Together they want to beat the system, to show Snow that the Capitol isn’t at all the good side. Katniss once hesitates to leave the group & survive with Peeta, but Finnick reminds her: “Remember who the real enemy is.” This triggers Katniss to not leave the group but instead choose to destroy Snow. She shoots an arrow with electrical charge & destroys the arena, and with it, she makes the uprising even more obvious for the people of Panem.

Katniss: Katniss is a girl, almost woman, from District 12 that has gone through a lot of horrors already. She survived the 74th Hunger Games, and now she finds out she has to go through this all over again. The book describes really well how she is handling, and sometimes not handling, these traumas. She is a really determined and strong person, but she also has her fears.

I would definitely recommend this book to others, especially if you had already read the first part “The Hunger Games” and liked that as well. It is just such an amazing read and it is full of emotion, action and adventure. It is also a very good book to read if you want to challenge yourself a bit because it isn’t the easiest use of English and there are some parts that are a little dicult too. I really loved the way that Suzanne Collins was able to express all the emotion and tension that is in the story, because with the uprising going on and the thought of Snow in Katniss’ head there was, of course, a lot of dierent emotions and tensions going on. I also like how it is a really good page-turner: because of the intense storyline and action going on, I really wanted to keep reading because I wanted to know how the story would continue. I am really excited to also read part 3, “Mockingjay”, after reading this book!
