One Halloween night my 3 friends and I decided to go trick or treating. This was my first night out on Halloween and I was honestly ecstatic. Our parents had informed us to not stay out for too long and emphasized we only stay in our neighborhood. The night started pretty ordinarily and we had begun our own collection of treats. Although, we were not prepared for what was soon to come.

Every building we set eyes upon was encrypted with the Halloween visuals. Including the four of us, we were also covered, head to toe in the sinister garments. Blinding orange lights danced across the houses. It was a clear night with only the moonlight illuminating the streets. I could feel a sharp breeze flowing through the air. The streets were crowded so my friends and I decided it was best to avoid the crowd and head to the quieter part of the area. It was far more peaceful although the deafening silence was almost chilling. We lived in a residential area, there was also a forest nearby which I had never seen myself. There were also stories about a building situated near the forest, it was said that whoever entered the house would not see the light of day again.

My friends and I had ranted about this subject before and as it was only rumored we never concluded this topic, until now. We decided to go visit the forest and see for ourselves if this theory was actually true as it was the most fitting time of the year. I knew where this forest was located as my grandad used to tell me horror stories about it and with that we set off in the direction of the forest. It felt like eons since we had been walking, this was especially refined as no one uttered a word since we had left. Eventually, we had made it, colossal trees stood before us with their branches spread out like wings. I could feel my breath getting heavier and my heart pounding out of my chest. Sweat was dripping from my forehead, I knew my friends felt the same but didn’t have the words to say it.

The walk through the forest was petrifying, the snaps and crackles of sticks beneath our feet were extremely irritating. We somehow found the courage to make it through and what we saw next confirmed all of our suspicions. We glared at the house surrounded by the trees only to be met with a dark eerie building with the windows smashed and soot growing off the walls like vines. The stench emanating from it was putrid, I could feel it from where I was standing, the grass which once held a pigment of green was rotting and full of rubbish. There was something odd about this building although I couldn’t figure out exactly what it was. We all stood there, paralyzed in fear.

We all turned away from it and didn’t have the courage to look back, however, we felt as though we had come so far and we would have wasted this opportunity. So we decided to creep over to the house, step by step, we had reached the front door. I reached out to ring the doorbell, it felt as though my finger got stuck on it, I quickly sprang back. Due to our mysterious mental, we figured it would be wise to explore the hellish house. We took one step and the sound of the floorboards caused agonizing fear however we proceeded to inspect the house. Demonic paintings covered the walls and it felt as though they were gazing into my soul. Sadistic smiles coated their faces. Antique furniture and other personal belongings were scattered across the floor, shattered plates and decaying books lead us into a small room upstairs. I felt gut-wrenching pain as I saw the puddle of blood, we all gasped in distress. BANG!, we heard the front door slam shut, I held my breath in desperation, there was a brief moment of silence, followed by the footsteps downstairs.

These weren’t the footsteps of a child, these footsteps were harsh and heavy. I quietly locked the door although the sound of the lock echoed through the house. We were certain that whoever was downstairs had acknowledged our presence. A sharp scraping sound broke the silence, it was like a knife or ax being dragged against the walls. I had butterflies in my stomach, the wind started screaming through the branches. The footsteps grew louder and louder, I felt my heart racing once more. I began to panic and looked at my friends who were just as terrified as me. I scouted the room to find something I could shatter the window with to my surprise I found a hammer (probably one of their belongings). I sprinted over and grabbed the hammer and swung at the window. Although the impenetrable glass did not fracture, I struck again, still nothing I felt the hammer ricochet off the window and bounce back to me.

The footsteps had reached the door. We all stood still, trying our best not to make any noise. What happened next stays with me to this day; the door was getting broken down, someone on the outside was striking it with brute force. I swung at the window as hard as I could and managed to crack it, the windows defenses were weakening. The door was now half was gone and we could see far more clear that it was a man, he embraced a scruffy beard and wore grimy clothes. The hole in the window was now big enough for us to fit through so I ordered my friends to climb out first, I stepped back to give them more space. I watched as the last one climbed through, so I dropped the hammer and darted to the window. I felt a sense of relief as I was halfway through the window until I felt a hand grasp my leg.

I felt my heart sink, the man had a hold on my leg. With all the remaining strength in my body, I wriggled from his grasp although I had caught my leg on the broken glass. It spurted arterial blood, the pain was unbearable, the blood had coated the house. I jumped through and braced for impact, I hit the ground extremely hard barely managed to get back up. My friends who were waiting for me helped me run, we ran in the direction we came and never looked back.
