Canadian Tire Research Report
Table of contents
Introduction
The purpose of this report is to conduct research on Canadian Tires as a potential future employer of TRSM graduate students. Along with using the Ryerson Library resources provided to conduct research on the company.
Method
The method of research that I used to for this report was the Canadian Tire cooperate website. This was an excellent way to obtain Cooperate Information about the company along with their work ethics, beliefs and involvement in the community. I also conducted further research by using the resources provided by the Ryerson Library which included Passport and IBISWorld databases.
Key Findings
Canadian Tires was founded in 1922 by brothers John W. and Alfred J. Billes in Toronto, Canada. Canadian Tires has become one of Canada’s largest pubic companies with 1,702 stores across Canada reaching a revenue of $12. 7 billion in 2016 (Nathanial Leach,2017). The company retails in “home improvement and gardening, automotive parts and repairs along with Mark’s Work Wearhouse (apparel and footwear)” (Passport ,2018, Briefing and Local company profiles).
Stephan Wetmore the president and CEO of Canadian tires has stated that “The strength of [their] core brand is at the heart of all of [their] growth strategies” as their “business [has] to be focused on serving one valuable customer as one great company” (Jane Shawn ,2015, Canadian Tire Cooperation). As apart of their business strategy Canadian Tires has taken the initiative to improve customer satisfaction by improving their stores performance and concept renewal which will help with the store’s sustainable growth. Canadian Tires has also been working on creating new HR strategy allowing more “communication channels to help share corporate strategies” along with improving their “internal transparency” to “engage senior leaders and employees” (Jane Shawn ,2015, Canadian Tire Cooperation).
They have also introduced a digital magazine “The Torch” (Jane Shawn 2015) which recognizes the success of employees and their achievement. Along with the “The Torch”(Jane Shawn,2015) they also have an excellent Co-op student program which gives new graduates an opportunity to take part in the “Next Generation Rotational Program”(Jane Shawn,2015) allowing graduates “two-to-three-year rotational program in technology, finance, marketing and supply chain” (Jane Shawn ,2015, Canadian Tire Cooperation).
Canadian Tires is actively involved within the community with charities like Canadian Tire Jump Start which has helped 1.5 million kids since the year 2005 to get involved into sports and helped 250,000 kids enroll in sports who come from low income families. The charity allows kids to get involved into “organized sports and physical activities” (Community, (n.d)) and helps “by assisting in costs associated with registration, equipment and other costs” (Canadian Tire Cooperation, (n.d), Community Section). Along with Jump Start Canadian tires also support their local community by investing in programs dedicated to active and healthy living. Canadian tires is also involved with 60 sport organizations within Canada providing “athletes with top-tier sports apparel and equipment” (Canadian Tire Cooperation, (n.d), Community Section).
Canadian Tires is also focused on environmental sustainability as they are committed to reducing their environmental foot print by producing less waste, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and consuming fewer resources. After the Rana Plaza tragedy Canadian Tire has been ensuring factory worker safety in Bangladesh as 47compines in Bangladesh provide Canadian tires with products. They have trained over 1.5 million workers while creating a 24-hour helpline for workers and helping reconstruct over 260 factories to improve the fire safety systems. Even though Canadian Tires has become one of Canada’s biggest retail stores its only limited to Canadian consumers therefore it is not well known globally. Considering the stores popularity among Canadian consumers, Canadian Tires should expand globally as it will allow them to grow as a company and compete with other bigger companies globally.
Conclusion
In conclusion Canadian Tires is a reputable and well-known company across Canada. They take great pride and value into helping the communities around them by creating charities like JumpStart that promote a healthy and active life style among Canadian youth along while providing financial assistance to low income families. Furthermore, Canadian Tires values and respect their employees by acknowledging their achievement and creating coop opportunities for new graduate students.
Recommendation
Canadian Tires is a great opportunity for TRSM graduate students as they provide an excellent coop program for recent graduates. Their “Next Generation Rotational Program” allows students to gain experience in “finance, marketing and supply chain” fields. Along with their coop program Canadian tire overall is a great company for TRSM graduate students to gain work experience and general knowledge on how a companies works together to create a strong brand.
