Sandberg graduated from Harvard with a B. A. in Economics in 1991. In 1995, Sandberg received her M. B. A. from Harvard Business School and began working as a management consultant for McKinsey & Company. In March 2008, after meeting Facebook’s co-founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg at a holiday party, Sandberg was announced as Facebook’s new COO. In 2012, Sandberg became the first female member on Facebook’s board of directors. In addition to her business career success, Sandberg has also been an inspiration for me because of her book, Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead. This book is advice for professional women seeking to achieve their career goals and succeed in a world dominated by men. I believe a lot can be learned about Sandberg’s career success as well as her book.

To begin, I think what really draws me to her is that her progression to her career is similar to what I envision for myself. I am also an undergraduate Economics major hoping to pursue a M. B. A. after working a few years as a management consultant. Secondly, Sandberg seems to work in a way that expresses her feelings that women belong in the workplace as much as men. I believe that too often, women are hesitant to be assertive for fear of “stepping on shoes” of men. Sandberg acts in a way that should inspire other women to achieve their career aspirations without worrying about gender differences. Additionally, she knows how to command attention when necessary in order to share her thoughts which is an area that I believe a lot of women struggle with. A large part of my respect for Sheryl Sandberg comes from her book. Originally, when my parents first shared with me Sandberg’s success, I did not think much of it because they often shared successful businesspeople with me in an attempt to “inspire” to one day become like that person. Despite my efforts to ignore the book, because of its continued publicity, eventually, I decided that Lean In was a book and campaign worth looking into.

A lot of Sandberg’s book is based off of her own personal experience and through understanding this book, I feel that I was able to better learn about Sandberg and the impact she could have on my life. Although Sandberg discusses a lot of different possibilities for women to achieve career success, a few stayed with me more than others. To begin, the idea of the leadership ambition gap was something Sandberg writes about. She believes that there is a double standard of the concept of ambition for men and women. However, this does not hinder Sandberg in her own life because she follows her ambition to pursue her goals. As a result of her success, in 2014, she was named the tenth most powerful woman on “Most Powerful Women in Business” by Fortune magazine. I believe this was impactful to me because I struggle with the idea of the double standard as well. I have an older brother and I always felt that his ambitions were more justified than mine, even if we wanted the same thing. However, as time goes on, I am working to be just as ambition as he is and act with the assumption that my ambitions are just as justified as his. Another idea that Sandberg emphasizes was the idea of making your partner a real partner. Sandberg is married to Dave Goldberg and she discusses how they operate with the “Shared Earning/Shared Parenting” style. Using this style, each partner is responsible for providing for the family as well as meeting the needs of the children.

This combats the old stereotype that women belong in the household while men belong in the workplace. By working as partners, women will not feel the burden of working a full time job and then having to go home to continue working while the men can rest. This really impacted me because I see that in my own household. Both of my parents work full time jobs but they divide up the work at home as well. Growing up, I would be able to ask either of my parents for rides during the work day in emergencies and they would work together to see who was more able to leave their work on that given day. It is also the type of lifestyle that I hope to have with my future partner. Since the beginning of time the world has been infected by incompetent or corrupt leaders (who hold power and authority) of all nationalities and from all walks of life. Many mistakes have been made by these people of authority and power whether by accident or by purpose. Although there are many explanations as to why leadership failures occur, one of the core reasons is integrity.

Merriam Webster defines integrity as a “firm adherence to a code of moral or especially artistic values (incorruptibility). ” Because of lack of integrity, many leaders are very susceptible to corruption, and easily fall prey to temptation. Leaders who lack integrity suffer a lack of support, and being easily corrupted, many times causes them to miss out on making a lasting impact on those they lead. Without a set leader or leadership, an organization will crumble. It’s like government in a way, no leadership equals anarchy. Anarchy isn’t the ideal system for really any group, organization, or sect. No one can take proper steps to making any type of a structured system in an organization when the skills to mentally and physically equip employees is absent. There has to be a leader in this day and age for any type of progress, and not just a leader, but a good one.
