Analysis of Camera Work During the Alien Invasion Scene in The Avengers Movie

This scene is taken from The Avengers released in 2012. One of the most iconic scenes is from the scene where all the avengers assemble to take down the alien foes they are facing from outer space. This moment was very significant to the filmmakers and also audience because after a long time of misconceptions throughout the movie from the other avengers.

They collided each other but later ended at a point and then they were finally ready to cooperate by putting aside their unreasonable doubts regarding each other to save the people in the movie. This scene consists of very low essences of background since it was held in just a single place throughout the movie. But the film makers put in a lot of effort for the lighting, computer generated images, visual effects, the camera angles, and movements for the audience and getting the impression on the Avengers how they fight to save the people.

The colors throughout the scene in the background are very minimal, also known as “earth colors” those colors help create the smoky effects which help the character’s costumes stand out while also helping their dominating presence in the scene against their enemies. There’s cutaway shots right after Dr. Banner (The Hulk) arrives at the scene which helps in obtaining other avengers reaction to this massive flying alien bought in by Iron Man.

After he’s bought in the alien that was following him, there’s an extreme long shot which consisted Iron Man and the alien in the background so the team on the ground can get a knowledge on just how massive the alien is. After Dr. Banner changes his appearance and turns into Hulk the scene goes into Reverse-angle shot between the flying alien and the Hulk. So, the team (avengers) and the audience may know how he transforms.

After the flying alien is killed the pedestrians and the avengers get a shot of low-angle and high-angle indicating the aftereffects of the enemy and their dominance. Later the scene is turned towards the aliens that were hanging on the buildings and the camera gave them a close-up shot, showing their real faces that were covered up with steel masks.

After the aliens shot the camera cuts to the avengers and the shot goes around them which is the full shot that was covering up the whole team seemingly indicating that they are a team now and willing to help each other and ending at Captain America. After the shot is done. It seems to have an eye level shot which also covers the team’s reaction to the enemies around them. While Cpt. America who seems to be standing in the middle of the shot also had significantly the most abundant amount of lighting in the scene showing his dominating presence amongst the rest of the Avengers due to his lighting effects on his costume.

The lighting on this shot is high contrasted lighting which contained punitive shafts of lighting and darkness into the scene. In addition to the characters costume the lighting adds intensity to the characters that are present at the moment with the addition of the smoke on the background that aggravates the action being performed on the particular scene.
