Introduction

Should people have to experience the pain while they're dying, or should they be able to prevent the pain? Euthanasia is a way for people to avoid experiencing extreme physical and mental pain. With euthanasia people will be able to have a tranquil death so they won't have to experience any pain. To prove why euthanasia should be legalized, this essay will discuss the pros of euthanasia, which are the folloeing: it gives the person more control over their body, it speeds up an illness that may slowly end your life, and it prevents your loved ones from having a traumatizing experience.

Pros of Euthanasia

First, euthanasia should be legalized because it gives the person more control over their own body. “Life may be not just having a heart pumping, but to flourish. What should happen when you can't flourish?' (Gross). This means that if a person can’t do anything with their own body such as people who are paralyzed which makes them not have any control over their own body and since they can’t “flourish” they’re not living life the way they would be able to if they weren’t stuck that way without controlling their own actions. For example in the article that Gross wrote he was talking about the twins who had been paralyzed their whole lives, the twins had done nothing throughout their whole life and later on became blind which means that their body had no use to them and all it did was pump blood throughout the body, people should be able to live life to the fullest but the twins didn’t even have a chance to see life anymore due to not any part of their body working properly. In this case with no use of the bodies, the twins must’ve felt trapped inside their own bodies. This also adds to the option of what happens to their own body because as a person, people should have the choice of going through mental/physical pain or not. The procedure of euthanasia doesn’t add any extra pain which means that one they begin the procedure they will only have their lives taken without pain because it was their own choice. With euthanasia being a painless procedure, people should be able to choose whether they want to fight through pain or struggle with their condition. Therefore, euthanasia should be legalized in the united states. Some may think that euthanasia can be bad due to it taking your life away, but this procedure is painless and can save people from suffering in bad cases just by choosing this procedure and it also gives them the liberty that they deserve because it should be the people’s option to take the procedure or not.

Overall euthanasia should be legalized because it gives the patient freedom over what happens to them while they're dealing with their health. Therefore, whenever people deal with the pain that they can’t handle, they should be given a choice between ending the pain or fighting through it.

Some people can be unlucky and be diagnosed with diseases such as cancer, aids and other deadly diseases that can slowly end your life. To show what patients of one of these deadly diseases think about euthanasia 'Victorian resident Jen Barnes, who suffers from a terminal cancer, said it would be a 'comfort' to know that she had the option to end her life and avoid suffering.' (Pearlman). Obviously, this can help people visualize what people with these deadly diseases think about euthanasia. As shown from this information, this person is comfortable knowing that she can end her life painlessly if it would come down to her cancer becoming stronger and eventually having not long before her death. Another example that can support euthanasia is the following quote that Schafer used in his article from a woman with a respirator to keep her alive, “Nancy B., a 25-year-old quadriplegic, told a Quebec Superior Court judge: 'I am fed up with living on a respirator. It's no longer a life.' (Schafer). As said by Nancy B. she was tired of not being able to live life at the fullest and the way she wanted to. As a result, she chose euthanasia to not suffer and longer. This may also add to all other people who have any dangerous disease and it could add less fear of knowing that one day they could lose the fight and have many procedures done to them that may add more pain to the one already coming from the disease because they know they can end their suffering with a painless procedure.

As a result, this is a reason why Euthanasia should be legalized because this shows how there is comfort from people who could one day use this procedure due to it being painless and it also allows the patient to not go through the pain that the certain disease may cause.

Family members of the patient can also play a huge role in how euthanasia should be carried out and how it could help them in not having to watch and know that one of their loved ones is suffering with a lot of pain. It is an instinct of humanity that they never want to watch their loved ones suffer and euthanasia could help with this by having the patient take the procedure and end their life with no further pain. As Kevin Gross stated, 'Although they were not terminal, there was still unbearable suffering, (both psychologically) and physically,' said Dufor. 'They had been begging for months to die.' (Gross). This shows how even if they weren't terminally ill, they had been through a lot of suffering and since they were also paralyzed, the family members who cared for them always saw how they would suffer, and this must've caused great pain towards their own feelings. This way euthanasia could’ve prevented traumatizing memories for the family members.

Conclusion

Euthanasia can have many helpful factors about it such as giving the patient more control over what happens to their own health, speeds up and illness that may cause great pain and death, and it can also help the patient’s loved ones not have to see any traumatizing things about them. With the legalization of euthanasia society won’t have to suffer with pain from any terminal illnesses which is the most important thing about the euthanasia procedure as they have the option to stop the pain in a painless way and death rate may also not go up due to a very low percentage of all deaths reported are deaths due to euthanasia. As a result, people should think about the good sides of euthanasia as it may one day help them get safe from extreme pain and it would give the ability to choose for their own state.
