Early Adulthood and Challenges

Bill Gates’s success we have all learned and heard about today, but he had some humble beginnings. Drawing from his experience as a pupil, he founded Micro-Soft Corp. with Paul Allen. Fun Fact: Yes, there was actually a hyphen between Micro and Soft at first! Their company at first had a 40-acre campus in the city of Redmond, Washington. And when the time came at the age of 31 to take Microsoft public in 1986, thanks to the magic of stocks and shares, Bill became an instant millionaire. One year later at 32, he met his soon to be wife, Melinda French. They soon married in 1994.

Building Upon Success

Mr. Gates has become one of the richest men in the world, along with being on the list of the world’s most influential people, because even after he became a millionaire, he did not stop there. In fact, when the stock of Microsoft ended up hitting a share of ninety dollars per share in 1987, Bill Gates graduated to becoming a billionaire. His wealth topped a whopping $101 Billion in the year of 1999. Since then, Bill Gates has always been at the top or around the top of Forbes’s annual list of the 400 richest people in the world, and he also used his wealth to buy a $54 million house on Lake Washington’s shores for his family. He stepped down from the CEO’s position of Microsoft in 2000, giving the position to a man named Steve Ballmer, a friend from college. Eventually, though, he left Microsoft in the late 2000s to focus on his charity, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Philanthropic Deeds

Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda Gates, have been called the “Most Generous Philanthropists in the World”, and their charity, the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, has garnered them a great number of awards for their deeds. Such awards include the Order of The Aztec Eagle, the Presidential Medal of Freedom from former president Barack Obama, and more. He has even been knighted by Queen Elizabeth II! Time magazine named him and Melinda some of the most influential people of the 20th century. At first, their charity focused primarily on education, world health, and help for low-income communities and neighborhoods. But soon, they combined other family foundations and made a huge contribution of a jaw-dropping $28 BILLION dollars to form what it is today in 2000. In April 2018, he announced he was giving $12 Million to support and fund a new flu vaccine. Bill and Melinda continue to fund education and resolve global issues all over the world today, and they are not planning on stopping anytime soon.
