The Effect Of Rhetorical Devices
As stated by the author Gerard Jones, in the article “Violent Media is Good for Kids” has an important goal that is to convince the audience that the exhibition of the television shows as, violent images, videos games, fights, between others. The author estimates that those things bring a positive outcome to all those kids farther in their future life. The author mostly emphasizes his goal through pointing out a personal experience of himself and his son as well to back up his opinion. Jones’ audience, who are the parents, may end up doubtful because of his personal experience, which sometimes seems to be emotional for some people. Additionally, Jones generalized his statements with a luck of rhetoric through the article. Therefore, the analysis will show at the end if whether or not the rhetorical devices used by Jones are affective in his persuasion. The author persuades the readers by highlighting his own experience while he was a child.
For instance, in the first paragraph of the text the author explicit explain his feeling of loneliness and feeling afraid of growing and getting into adolescent life. Jones had the feeling of being different from his peers so he ends up in his own world. Additionally, he also mentions that his parents separate him from the real world at that time, the American pop culture. Thus, here is when the author riches his objective with efficiency bringing the pathos of the reader into action. On the same hand, one of the important parts of the article is when Gerard Jones compare his life with the Incredible Hulk, the incredible man who is being persecuted as a monster and nobody understood him. The one who was frightened because of people. Therefore, this allows Jones to be as his favorite superhero with the characteristics said. This point is one of the most attracting for the readers, so pathos anew plays a role here. The emotion of the reader plays an important role for Jones; therefore, similar to his story he also points out his’ son stories, which is similar to his while he was a child. Thus, the author uses metaphors of his son to make his point even stronger “transforming into a bloodthirsty dinosaur to embolden himself for the plunge into preschool, a Power Ranger to muscle through a social competition in kindergarten” (Jones, pp. 65). This metaphor makes the readers reflect and take into consideration that their children may have grown up in the same way while losing their fears. Hence, the author keeps using rhetoric through the text to make clear to the reader that violent media may have positive benefits or effects on children. The last, it also seems almost in the last part of the article that the author generalizes a fact that children do not affront the fairness of violence.
Therefore, this will be more harm for them in a future run. “Modern kids are far more likely to grow up too passive, too easily manipulated” (Jones, pp. 67). With this quote, Jones makes a comparison saying that if the young of today do not experience violence of any type; they will suffer in the future because those young will be easy manipulated. However, there is not proof to back up is opinion. Gerard Jones does not present any evidence or sadistic that may prove his statement of the young of today being passive and manipulated for others who had experienced violence before. The Analysis shows prove that the author uses rhetorical devices to attempt to persuade his audience. Thus, different points are use as compering his life with the incredible Hulk, where pathos is being used. He also uses metaphor to tell his son’s story and bring up the sad feeling of the readers. Furthermore, he also generalizes a fact presented at the end without given statistics or any further explanation about it. Thus, the persuasion made by Jones lucks logos and pathos shows to be quite weak throughout Jones’s persuasion. There is an unbalance of rhetorical devices.
