The Disadvantages of Applying to and Studying in the Yale University
There are 4,462 international students and scholars attending Yale University. That is the approximate amount accounted in year 2016 alone. Yale University is one of the top Ivy League colleges around. With an average GPA of 4.19 and a 2265 on the SAT’s the chances of acceptance is higher. Only the top competitors in the world have more chances in getting any financial aid once accepted into Yale. Although Yale is a wonderful school it fails to mention that it lies in a dangerous city, has expensive dorms, and doesn’t offer psychology and or neuroscience majors to undergraduates.
First, when deciding the right college, consider the location. It is too far from family? Is it overpopulated? These are the questions you should ponder about. Connecticut is a small place with festivities. According to Connecticut’s Country Fairs website “There are tons of activities, entertainment, live music and delicious food” and historical landmarks. Therefore, New Haven can become too crowded. In addition, Connecticut is located near a large amount of water. So, it is cold due to the Atlantic Ocean breeze.
Secondly, Unlike the average amount of $8,887 per year at a public school for room and board Yale, a private school, charges $9,283 more for dormitories. The dorms are big enough for 2 roommates, but students may choose to live alone. However, all freshmen are placed on Yale’s “old campus” with smaller dorms and several other freshmen. Whom all share one living room and kitchen.
After the second year of attending Yale University there is an application process that needs to be completed for personal dorms on the new campus. The new dorms are already furnished with beds, desks, chairs, tables, and much more. The only piece of furniture that isn’t included with the dorm is a refrigerator. If a refrigerator is needed one must be purchase from the school or bring one from home. If one is brought from home, it is not allowed to remain on campus during the summer.
Lastly, before the final decision on a college is made make sure that it offers a preferred undergraduate major. If majoring in law; Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and other private Ivy League colleges are best suited, but any medical fields aren’t. So, Yale isn’t the best choice. Yale doesn’t offer psychology or neuroscience majors upon graduation, and that’s with all medical majors at Yale. If enrolled in psychology classes at Yale postgraduation the debt increases to $14,700. Plus, there isn’t a guarantee that a job is available for that career unless it is a Law related career.
In conclusion, Yale is a wonderful college for most people, but after doing the research it has some discrepancies. Perhaps the location, expensive dorms, and their majors doesn’t bother some students, but why locate to a dangerous city, become broke, and waste years in college relearning the basics when there are various colleges that await.
