Scrooge's Transformation and Evolution Throughout Charles Dickens' Novel
Scrooge is a different type of person. He is cruel and rude to others and expects the same to him. Dickens illustrates that Scrooge has terrible way of treating others until, the Christmas Spirits helped him. The spirits change him in a few different ways. Since they change him, in a good way he becomes really different than before.
Before, the first Spirit came and helped him he was very selfish. Scrooge became very selfish when his buddy Marley died on Christmas Eve. It was seven years ago when Marley died. Scrooge was still working and, there was another partner of his, working with him. Once, Bob asked for some coal to keep warm but no that didn’t happen. Even though, Scrooge didn’t use the coal he still said “no”. Since, Bob is very poor and doesn’t get paid a lot that would be very helpful for him. He also would like 15 shillings a week but, that is “too much” exclaimed Scrooge. For Scrooge money is very important even though he doesn’t do anything with it yet.
When the Spirits came they showed him the past, present, and future. The past showed him how he acted. It also showed himself, Fan and his dad and how he was left at a boot camp for part of Christmas break. The present showed Scrooge what is going on now around him and how is is acting. The present shows his nephew and his family eating dinner. It also showed how Scrooge was acting to others and how others were affected. The third spirit showed Scrooge the future. The spirit pointed the whole time. There was Scrooge watching Tiny Tim dying and himself in a graveyard dead. That is what the spirits showed Scrooge.
Scrooge changed a lot after what the spirits showed him. Scrooge started to donate money to the poor, put money towards Tiny Tim, and even gave Bob a raise, which he did no of before. When Scrooge donated money he donated a lot. Scrooge said to the man who came to collect donations, “Come and see me. Will you come and see me?” (pg. 118) he is essentially he is saying please come back next year to get another large donation and the year after that and so forth. The old gentleman replied “I will.”(pg. 118) Scrooge also gave Bob a raise Bob Cratchit was very shocked. He thought, when he had to go over to Scrooge he was going to get fired. Later, Scrooge helped out Tiny Tim not die. Helped him out by giving money for his cause to him for medication so he wouldn’t die. After all Tiny Tim didn’t die and Scrooge said, “that he knew how to keep Christmas well…”. (pg. 113-122)
Scrooge changed from being a rude person to a nice person. Scrooge essentially got a second chance. When he got a second chance he went over to the Cratchits house and ate dinner over there. Also, he donated lots of money to the poor which he described as the people who should go into mental hospitals. That is how the ghosts had an effect on Scrooge and how Scrooge went through every stage also how he changed from being mean and cruel to others changing into a happy, joyful, and greatful type of person.
