Introduction

In our modern world everyone is seeking to make their lives easier and faster as we have more tasks to achieve, yet at first, we didn’t know how to achieve this idea. So with the help of scientists, they started to create new technologies to do so, ever since the 19th century. But now we call them emerging technologies because they are technologies that are being developed to better versions using their older versions too at a swift pace. There is a vast amount of types of this technology like nanotechnology, educational technology and etc. But in my assignment my purpose is to talk about two other types, Robotics and Cloud Computing.

Robotics

Robotics is a technology that creates machines designed to carry out several tasks automatically using a processor on behalf of humans in a more efficient and faster way comparing to human because humans get tired after repeating the same tasks for a long period of time this often leads to incomplete work or finish. In 1921, the word ‘robot’ was coined by a Czech playwright which is actually derived from a Slavic word ‘robota’ that means a hard working slave. But the first actual robot that acted in a human-like behaviour was made in 1948 by the British pioneer called Wilmer Grey Walter with simple electronics that allowed the robot to run with low power.

How does it work? In every robot, there must be some main components that have to consist in it for it to be able to perform a certain task, such as: A body structure, sensors placed around the structure to collect data about its surrounding, a muscle system that enables the structure to move, a computer that processes information given by the sensors and also give orders to the muscle structure to make a certain move or task. It is basically a simple flow where your processor would make decisions and act on its surrounding from what it received from the sensors.

Where is it used? Robots are used everywhere but they are commonly used in the industrial areas because they can perform tasks that may put humans in dangerous situations or the tasks are just hard for humans. Like when manufacturing cars robots are used to cut and put parts of the car together at a faster rate and in a more efficient way. They are also used for social work, where robots can communicate and perform social duties by talking or making sounds. These robots can be referred to as humanoids, for example, the Japanese HRP-4C Robot was designed to look like a Japanese woman that could sing, dance and perform mini-concerts for its fans.

Its impact on our lives: Through the years robots are being used more in our daily lives but this could have a positive or a negative impact on us. For example, robots can do tasks that can involve humans in hazardous situations and this lets us risk fewer lives by replacing workers with these robots. They also help us achieve tasks way more accurately and swifter than us because we tend to lose our energies while repeating the same task for a long time and that cause us to make mistakes. But this replacement can also save lots of money since you don’t need to pay every worker, you will just need to pay for the maintenance and the technician who takes care of them, this is a big advantage but it is also a huge disadvantage for people because the rate of employment has dropped sharply with this move.

Cloud computing: Cloud computing is a system where it allows users to access shared resources using servers to store and process these data instead of doing it manually via the internet. Cloud computing consists of certain features like a network access (the Internet) and a vast amount of resources to be shared between multiple users.

Cloud computing falls into three categories:

  1. SaaS, Paas & Iaas. They can also be referred to as cloud computing stack because they build on one another.
  2. Saas (Software as a Service)It is a service that allows a user to pay only when they use it and they don’t have to download the software in their device where they also can be accessed via a web browser or an application that is easily used. The fact that it is fast and cheap to use makes it more suitable for end users. Some examples of this type of service are Google Drive & Microsoft 365.
  3. Paas (Platform as a Software)It is a cloud-based software that has everything that is needed to make an application without having to get involved in programming languages. It usually offers a ready operating system, a web server & a database and the users would have to manage their own resources & data on their own. This is commonly used by developers in services like Google App Engine, Heroku & Windows Azure.
  4. Iaas (Infrastructure as a Service)This is an instant and basic architecture of computing that offers users computer resources like servers, hardware, security & maintenance. So the users are responsible for maintaining their applications, data, runtime & middleware. Sysadmins (people who are responsible to manage and maintain a multi-user computing environment) are the ones who use this service the most. Such services include Amazon Web Services & GoGrid.

Pros & Cons of Cloud Computing:

Pros:

  1. They can be accessed anywhere using any device that has internet.
  2. It is an easy choice for sharing documents.
  3. Companies offer modest software tools.
  4. It’s cheap and fast.

Cons:

  1. It cannot be used when there is no internet.
  2. If the internet is slow it will affect its performance
  3. It can be hacked.

Conclusion

To conclude my assignment, Robotics and Cloud Computing are emerging technologies that will always be used and developed due to increases of usage by user all of the world and the benefits that we gain from these technologies using the internet and computers and many other devices around us.
