The holiday celebrates the fight for liberty and resistance against tyranny that began when the first shots were fired at the Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. Patriots' Day has a great historical and cultural significance for Massachusetts and the whole nation.

Significance and Traditions

Patriots' Day commemorates the outbreak of the American War of Independence and has been an official holiday in Massachusetts since 1894. It is observed on the third Monday in April but the actual anniversary of the battles is April 19th. The Battles of Lexington and Concord were the first military engagements of the Revolutionary War. They marked the beginning of the American colonists' armed rebellion against British rule. When British troops set out to seize colonial military supplies in Concord on April 19, 1775, they were confronted by American militiamen in Lexington. In the ensuing skirmishes, later known as the "shot heard round the world," the British suffered great losses while the rebels' resistance signaled the start of the Revolutionary War.
