We had stepped out of the plane at the Honolulu Airport, and into a world, we have never encountered before. It was the first ever vacation beside my extended family, and it was off to a great start. The dazzling bright sunlight shone across the scorching hot pavement as we all felt nervous and thrilled. Surrounded by the endless ocean and waves of wind blowing towards your face like your standing on the beach. I heard the babbling of the sparrows and squeal from the gulls. The sea was glistening like stars, and the scent of fresh air was present. “I can’t believe it! We are actually in Hawaii!” My brother spoke. The sun struck down on my skin, warming and relaxing my body in its radiance. I experienced a fresh smell of a flowery scent drifting from a stand covered wholly in divergent brilliant colored garlands called Lei. There were blue, yellow, purple, red, and any color you could think of.
My brother and I walked up to the stand and was greeted by an old lady. “Aloha,” she said, which meant greetings in the Hawaiian language. We purchased a blue and red Lei from the kind lady. We dived our faces deep into the fresh, damp petals, and breathed in the euphoric scent that came from the tiny flowers. After squeezing our way through the crowds of anxious tourists, we made our way to the road where we were picked up by family friends living there. As we started driving further away from the airport and into the city, I began to see remarkable things. All of the trees had flowers just decorating every branch, and if there weren’t flowers, the trees loaded with bananas, papayas, mangos, and starfruit.
We couldn’t believe our eyes; Hawaii was just so elegant and vibrant. No matter where you observed, it was abundant with lively hues. The colors of the rainbow bounced into our eyes. We had slowed down and to our right was the glaring sea that took our breath away. “Quick, take some pictures,” my mom said. “We are on a cliff shore made of pointed, dark lava rock.” It didn’t matter how bad your camera was; the view made it 100x better. We watched as the sea twirled underneath the sunlight which was shimmering on the rippling tides. It was a strong, deep blue in spots and a luminescent, aquamarine green in others. Deep purple flowed through and turquoise speckled the surface. The lustrous rich golden beach glistened in the sun’s heat.
We drove all the way down to Sandy Beach and ascended out of the car and dashed down to the pure blue sea. “Let’s go have fun!” My dad said. We all walked on the heated sand as it squished beneath our feet and made my leg muscles tense to keep myself moving and balanced. We all stood there feeling it all in, the sun on my exposed shoulders, the pleasant, comfortable sand underneath our feet, and the constant urge to plunge into the refreshing chill water. The tides lightly smashed along the seashore and dragged themselves closer and closer as if they were inviting me to join in with them. I smiled to myself and determined that I would join in on their fun. I took an enormous deep breath and dipped into the salty, silky water.
The water was chilled and delightful; I felt it brush through my hairs making it play in the rain. I swam more intensely and further into the blue-green sea. Sunshine infiltrated through the surface, changing the water around me into gold. I propelled harder, and I sensed a surge of energy as I advanced further. My lungs began to blaze for the demand for oxygen, but I didn’t go up. Just a little bit longer just a little longer. Not able to swim without more oxygen in my lungs, I thrust through the surface of water taking an enormous breath, inflating my lungs with restored oxygen. I tasted the intense salty water as it traveled downwards on my head and trickled all over my mouth. “Alright, let's go to our hotel so we can get settled,” my dad said. We raced back to shore to dry off and called that a day. But, it was only the beginning of the most exceptional vacation ever. We will never forget this occasion, this area, or the experiences we felt while visiting Hawaii. It changed us forever, and we will remember the moments we had together.
