The Part of Religion, Beliefs and Spirituality in an Individual’s Life
Spirituality is a broad concept with room for many perspectives. In general, spirituality is a sense of connection to something bigger than ourselves, and it typically involves a search for meaning in life. Spirituality/Religion is a universal human experience, something that touches us all in one way or another. Everybody needs vital beliefs that give them some sense of meaning and hope in the midst of losses, tragedies, and failures. Every person needs to have values, priorities, and life commitments. Spirituality is an increasingly important topic to people today. Individuals approach the realm of spirituality through religion, meditation, personal reflection, and even nature.
Though I may not have a specific religion, I do have a spiritual side to my life that I take very seriously. I do not believe in any higher being other than nature. When I think of my spirituality, I think of nature as being my “God”. I do not question life, I believe that nature is responsible for all existing life. Nature’s trees are the reason we breathe, water is responsible for hydration and aquatic life, fruits, vegetables, and plants grow which enable us to nourish our bodies and the earth, etc. Nature has nourished human and animal life for millions of years and is what I believe to be a “higher power”. Mother nature cannot be controlled however it can be influenced by human nature.
Spirituality is most important to me because it is the way you find meaning, hope, comfort, and inner peace in your life, and it is believed to be linked to your overall health. Some people may find it through religion, music, or art, but my spirituality connection is within nature. Some research shows a connection between your beliefs and your sense of well being. Positive beliefs, comfort, and strength gained from religion, spirituality, meditation, and prayer can contribute to an individuals well being. It is also believed to promote healing. Improving your spiritual health may not cure an illness, but it may help you feel better. It also may prevent some health problems and help you cope better with illness, stress, conflict, or death. No one really knows for sure how spirituality is related to health. However, it is true that the body, mind, and spirit are connected.
Since there are so many different religions and countless ways to practice spirituality it is important to understand that we all have the right to believe in anything. It is more than likely you will meet or already know that believe in many different things. Even young children have beliefs such as Santa Claus, Peter Rabbit, monsters, and many other make-believe entities. From the moment you come into the world, you begin developing your belief system. Many times a person believes in things that are taught to them from relatives or parents, or tradition. Others may have to find their beliefs and spirituality and it is common for individuals to change beliefs often. Beliefs are present through childhood and continue to grow throughout life. Religion, beliefs, and spirituality are an important part of everyone’s life whether we are consciously aware of it or not.
