Human Sexuality Research On Beverly Whipple

Dr. Beverly Whipple is not only a sex researcher, but a certified sexuality educator, and sexuality counselor. Her research has been emphasized primarily in women’s health issues and the sexual physiology of women. Her education history started in getting a BS in Nursing from Wagner College, a Masters in counseling as well as nursing, and a PhD in Psychobiology along with Neurophysiology, from Rutgers University. Dr. Whipple has been awarded the Kinsey award, the Distinguished Scientific Achievement award, and the Public Service Award, and many others. She is notably considered one of the 50 most influential scientists in the world by “The New Scientist.”

Dr. Whipple has over 30 years of experience according to the interview. She’s devoted her profession course to ratify her research in physiology, laboratory, and case studies observed and surveyed on women. One of her focus has been on asking women to report their experiences of pleasurable and or/ orgasmic experiences. Dr. Whipple said that not many researched focused on women or understanding their responses to sexuality. Dr. Whipple shared that more research has been done on men’s sexuality than women. Dr. Whipple opinion was due to the fact that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned testing of drugs on women of childbearing ages from 1977-1993.She has also written and co-author books one that is apparently famous in the sexuality realm called “The G Spot and other Discoveries About Human Sexuality.” As well as “The Science of Orgasm,” and has also published other books and many research articles. Dr. Whipple says, that with the aid of technology “we are learning that orgasm is not just a reflex but something in which the brain and the rest of the body are also involved.” Dr. Whipple argued that the DSM-IV labeled women as dysfunctional rather than listening to what women had to say it places them in a box, automatically calling them dysfunctional.

When asked what Dr. Whipple would suggest to those studying human sexuality she basically said to focus on one realm of the research. "So many people (studying human sexuality) are so broad (in what they look into) and they are not focused enough. It's important for people to figure out what is of interest to them and then focus on those areas," she said when she had been interviewed. Beverly Whipple’s contribution to research more in depth opened more possibilities to exploring women sexuality. One of the many contributions were also to the World Association for Sexology. Dr. Whipple also focused on sexuality with women with complete spinal cord injury.

Another interesting research was on women ejaculation, along with other professionals. She was well known for re discovering the g spot, in terms of women who seek pleasure. Dr. Whipple contributed to naming the G spot on honor of Dr. Gränfenberg. “Most researchers were men and were fitting women into the male model,” she says. Dr. Whipple says that men tried putting women into a model of what they suggested women should be. Dr. Whipple lives in New Jersey with her husband Jim. They’ve been married since 1962 and she is now 82 years old. They have two adult children and five grandchildren. She has been a great honor in the sexuality educative society for women’s overall better living.

There’s also other researchers who come against Dr. Whipple and have found that there isn’t an actual G- spot but it has been fully accomplished to successfully say there’s no spot that adds pleasure to female pleasure zones.
