Forms of Marijuana Legalization in Mexico
Marijuana’s legalization is becoming common nowadays. The legitimacy of its utilizations depends on the country they are being used in. Its use is mainly medicinal in most countries, howerver few countries do allow its use for personal use for pleasure, leisure and satisfaction. 21 countries are known to have legalised their use. The cannabis are known to have originally evolved in Central Asia and were later introduced in Africa, Europe and the Americas. The pleasure people experience from the use of the plant is accompanied by a list of side effects. It possesses a potential threat to the development of the country as it affects the youth, posing a clear danger to the future of the world.
Many measures have been taken by the UN in the past to reduce the effect of the psychotropic substances worldwide. Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs has its aim of combatting drug abuse by international coordination. An international management system for psychoactive substances has been made by the Convention on Psychoactive substances. United Nations Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances includes measures against trafficking of drugs, and also has precautionary steps against money laundering and the distribution of precursor chemical drugs
The use of cannabis for recreational purposes is illegal in Mexico, however its use can be done for medicinal purposes. The Mexican government and the Mexican court is looking forward to change this, and legalize marijuana in Mexico for recreational purposes as well, although along with some strict rules and regulations. Currently , even though cannabis are not legal for personal use, many people possess, cultivate and smuggle the drug . Prohibiting the citizens from growing cannabis for consumption is declared unconstitutional by the Mexican court as it violated human right to free development.
The economy of Mexico will receive a great boost in its economy as it can bring in over $1. 2 billion in tax revenues. About $200 million could also be saved from law enforcement costs. The law enforcement costs would also be saved amounting over $200 million. Jobs for the citizens will also be created which will result in decrease of unemployment rates.
In most countries, psychoactive drugs that have the potential to be misused, are prohibited by the law. Decriminalization involved modest fines and small charges when caught having small amounts of a drug. Medicalization is a policy for psychoactive drugs like the marijuana that involves the use of drugs for medicinal purposes.
Legalization has 3 forms. Legalization without commercialisation allows the production, distribution and sale of drugs to be legal, but with any advertising or branding. The second type allows the legalization with restricted commercialization. The third part is the legalization with unmitigated free market commercialization. All these ideas might prove to be potential solutions, if enforced properly.
