I am applying the theory of task centered practise to understand the different range of problems in the family followed by the attachment theory to understand the various behavioural patterns. The family is a system which is a part of the bigger systems therefore the system/ecological perspective plays a key in explaining the family’s situation Task Centered Practise. As the cruise family is dealing with wider range of problems I would use the task centered practise rather than crisis intervention as task centered identifies and reacts to major continuing problems. Task centered practise are a set of brief structured activities or interventions to achieve the specific and clearly defined goals in a specific time period. It started from the comparisons of brief and extended therapies and are more directed to solving the immediate goals which may not be helpful through long term practises. This practise involves certain steps which the worker and the client needs to follow. Firstly the worker develops who the client is and sets the purpose of intervention. After forming a formal relation with the client, the practitioner articulates the information by being an active listener and recognising the areas of concern. Secondly, task centred prioritises the experiences and problems with regard to the client’s choice. The preferences are sorted by interviewing the client thus in the entire process it allows a correlation of clients priorities and strengths. This set of problems is called the target problems. The agreement is then documented. This results in a set of agreed tasks to be performed by the client and tasks undertaken together to attain the goals set. Working on clearly defined goals for short term encourages commitment to achieve between the client and the practitioner. Task centred practise here is strongly reflecting the shared value principle of aims by clearly specifying the outcomes. Evaluation, analyses and redefining goals forms the borderline of every task or session where the worker and the client reviews the outcomes, terminates and facilitates to another task for another problem.

The main argument of the task centered practise is that the method of solving the prioritised problems and the success of achieving it assists the client in gaining determination and consequently result in attaining more goals which therefore results a healthy system. However it is essential to successfully deal with problems from the most important to the less importance. Here the practitioner needs to recognize the use of shared value principle of action sequence. This balance factor allows the workers to openly share their works with clients and their family and thus supports the practise with a clear action sequences.

One of the values of task centered practise is to build on people’s strength rather than analysing their deficits. The worker with this approach identifies and encourages to strengthen their abilities. This is particularly significant in case of Lisa. It should be known that every child has certain potentials despite their physical and intellectual capacities and it is the parents or guardians responsibility to support such abilities. Task centred approach would therefore aid in building the awareness of this and assist Lisa individually to attain her capacity which would mitigate certain problems. It is also crucial for the adults to support and allow child to develop in a healthy environment as childhood is a stage to explore their potentials without making assumptions.

Task centred practise approach involves capacity building and this would allow to enhance the behaviours rather than adding new ones.

Principle

Empirical orientation: The practise advances by interviewing the client. There is always a possibility to recognise other issue which might not be mentioned in the case study due to lack of recognition on the client’s part. As this principle encourages the worker to interview and collect data at every stage of assessment, process and outcome it reveals the areas of refinement and therefore the adults of the Cruise family could work together on identifying the hidden facts and set new goals. The information regarding John could be clearer by multiple interview sessions with the family members. Here the worker can reflect the social penetration theory. As every individual’s personalities are multi layered with every task the client could reveal different aspects of their issue and moreover the worker can have a clearer picture.

Briefly structured goals: this is the principle focusing on working on tasks to attain short term changes as small changes are more meaningful than the radical changes. The cruise family could work on small changes and after few sessions could attend to the immediate crisis as Bob is concerned about getting a balanced life. The socio-economic status and only one source of income have likely affected their emotional stability on individual level and relationships among the member. Task could involve in identifying the better job opportunities for Jill. It is believed that bringing about large scale social changes is beyond the scope of social work and hence problem solving with a person centred approach is more successful. The task could involve the adults to keep pace with three different age groups of child development instead of conducting the same parenting manner as different age reflects different behaviour thus enhancing their ability of parenting.
