In the United States where females contribute significantly and equally into the united states economy and workforce, by having the same knowledge and experiences in a specific position and working the same number of hours as American males, and yet they receive considerably less salary compared to what their male colleagues receive by doing the same job in the same position. If the two employees who work in the same company and do the same job in the same position, then what can be consider in the pay discrepancy between a male and female?. This was the centuries old problem that Lily Ledbetter unconsciously had faced during her nineteen years working at Goodyear Tire Company. She began to do something against this unfair treat towards female gender.

Lilly Ledbetter was a supervisor at Goodyear Tire Company for nineteen years, but she was getting considerably less salary in comparison to her male colleagues, after nineteen years when it was almost her retirement time she anonymously received a note that she was receiving very less amount of money in return for what she was working in that company in comparison to the same job as her male coworkers were receiving. After that she filed a lawsuit against the Goodyear Tire Company, this start was a good effort to correct a centuries old problem of gender-based wage discrimination.

The supreme Court decided that according to Title VII, discriminatory intent must occur during the 180-days charging period, which means she had taken action very late against this issue. But she argued that the discriminatory behavior has been occurred long before, but still affected her during the 180-days charging period. In 2007, several Democratic members of Congress proposed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which revised the law to state that if a present act of discrimination pertains, prior acts outside of the 180-day statute of limitations for pay discrimination can be incorporated into the claim. In January 2009, Congress passed, and President Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act into law.

This bill allows individuals faced with discrimination against discrimination to seek relief under the federal anti – discrimination law. Under the law, discrimination based on age, religion, nationality, race, sex and disability is stated as ‘cumulative’ every time an employee receives a salary considered as discrimination. The bill was named after a lawsuit filed by alleging that the manufacturing director at Goodyear Tire Manufacturing Plant in Alabama proved that her salary reflects gender discrimination in 1998. Ledbetter’s appeal was ultimately dismissed in the Supreme Court, but this ruling ignited extremist groups that believed that the court’ s decision was a retreat of women and citizens’ rights.
