Different Forms Of Government: Communism Versus Democracy
Among different forms of the government, democracies overwhelmed other major systems that it somehow is being more questioned by intellectuals that created our democratic system. It has come to question whether all countries are democratic or but does raise a possible obstacle for the future. Democracy can either change or adapt depending if it faces a larger threat in the future. We are still committed to a point that even if people do not love or believe in their system, it becomes the better solution in the long run than any other method that could have been implemented back then.
Let’s use David Brooks, “How Democracies Perish” as the base of this paper. He used Patrick Deneen as partner in his reading saying a liberal democracy turned their back on but created a new aristocracy and more increase in inequality (Brooks). The people that founded our system definitely had major flaws that still shows to this modern day and age. One of the major flaws that is portrayed in the reading was that “people are political, relation and rational people” (Brooks). Democracy either makes us live in a society to where we have multiple occurrences of violence or allows us to create solutions or adapt to new threats. If we were to go back in time, Deneen also comments on all communism and fascism failed in the century yet if look more closely, free societies had their weakness that made them on the defensive against communism. It falls back to us neglecting the moral order and virtue that is in liberalism itself, standing for ideas of family and community that grants us towards higher dreams. Yet we still see too many problems arising within these upcoming years that we feel like we have a system trapping us since we lost faith in them.
If we were to reference another reading would be Siva Vaidhyanathan, “Facebook Wins, Democracy Loses”. The Ny Time article basically stated the fact that Facebook is becoming more affordable and easier due to ads that are either fake news or dangerous sites with viruses. Facebook just need to do a better job when monitoring advertisements. But Facebook doesn’t care about the democracy if it can keep selling more and increasing their revenue and yet it is alarming on the increase amount of foreign intervention in America like from Russia. Facebook wouldn’t had that much impact on the election, well at least they wouldn’t do it intentionally. The main point from the system’s perspective is that people keep engaging with Facebook in terms of what you like or comment. What made the election more confusing was that the information systems were working around fake news that were developing suspicious businesses just to maximize engagement because you could never know if a famous person like the Pope shows up on a post saying he has endorsed President Trump. (Vaidhyanathan)
Summarizing and answering back to the question, what guarantees any democracy is the citizens must see the long run and be fully committed, even if it is unconditionally in case their party has power. If people were to not just support it but abandon their democracy as their best form of government, an endangered democracy emerges. From experiences, democracies fail due to elites in powerful positions, in general designed to side with the majority and not aid the minorities. Thus, the oppressed minority rebel through non-electoral means. Example would be what happen when the executive authority becomes full of largely dedicated liberals, thus powerless people will lead an rebellion, threating the government. Democracy will still prevail either way because it becomes a necessary asset that even through all the debates and opinions from everyone, everyone has their basic rights, their right to live.
