Comprassion of Ancient Greek Art from Different Periods
Ancient Greek, Art was one of the most artistically and architecturally sounded times on earth we know Throughout the years of ancient Greek art there was four main periods of art throughout ancient Greece. Geometric period from 1100 BCE to 750 BCE. Archaic 750-480 BCE. Classical 480-323 BCE. Hellenistic 323-30 BCE.
In geometric art, it was really shaped by Mycenaean art which was right before the geometric period. Art in the 10th century, BCE include easy simple liner type art. In the 9th century BCE, many more complex patterns were added to the art such as zigzags, circles, and triangles. In the 8th century BCE in we first saw figurative art first we saw animals then we saw humans. Some features of the created art throughout this period could be zigzags, lines, chariots, armed warriors, horses, and amphora.
In the Archaic period I feel that this is when art really started to grow within ancient Greek art. There was more natural feel to the art during this interval. A few new techniques took part during this time period such as metal work, gem cutting, glass and ivory cutting. Big wealthy cities and states created temples, fine gold jewelry and large scales of marble statues. Art of athletic events, mythological scenes and everyday life were big during this time. Black figure pottery dominated all other types of pottery during this time and in architecture doric and ionic columns were a big part of the architecture and were used in most temples. Nude male sculpture was another good focus point of the era and a good example of this was the kouros sculpture. After the loss to the Persians in 473 BCE Athens was the dominate polis and was flourishing and they had a lot of kingly power. Pericles Athens stateman wanted to strut Athens prestige through the Acropolis especially in the doric temple to Athena. Athena is a goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, strategic warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, the arts, crafts, and skill. Which they had a big statue of her in ivory and gold.
During this time, the classical period this was the introduction of the contrapposto pose which was a more natural pose which showed figures at rest. Also, during this time, they introduced poses of action such as athletes to show off a muscular body. Males were usually nude, and woman were usually clothed.
Now onto the Hellenistic period. In this period, we saw more natural art, more emotion and more dramatic movement. In history during this time Alexander the Great took over an empire that went from Greece to about India. After the death of Alexander the Great and his successors riches we saw the creation palaces, gardens, and public monuments and buildings. In this period people, the environment, and animals became acceptable for art. Artists were no longer restricted into making unrealistic art. People and creatures from mythology from different shapes and sizes were now being created.
