Comparison of New England and Chesapeake
Colonies are not always the same they have their differences, that makes them unique from one another. Usually they differ from economically, religiously, and their societal structure which is common we are not all the same in this world. New England and Chesapeake are very different than you realize as they are and that is what I am going to be explaining.
Economy leads to business and that is what we need in order to operate, we need goods services somehow and involving colonies helps with our economy. Let's start with New England comparing to Chesapeake's economies. First of all, New England is structured with colonies which were the following: Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New Hampshire. They are what made up New England. New England has a mixed economy of agriculture and commerce that involves with merchant's, ship building, whaling etc.; meanwhile it is composed of small towns. As well as slavery was involved in New England but on a smaller scale which was not as recognizable as other colonies had. In the other hand we can acknowledge that Chesapeake's economy included cash crops, they mostly used tobacco as their merchandise as a way of making money and profit. Some colonies involved were Maryland and Virginia which were named because of the famous Chesapeake Bay. As a big difference Chesapeake had Indentured Servants, it was a passage and in order to be at used there was an amount of money that had to be paid to go to America for 4 to 5 years. Considering the Indentured Servant, The Headright System benefitted the wealthy landowners because of the Indentured Servant. It provided more acres of land to individuals that paid for the Indentured Servant. As well as the Bacon Rebellion is a major difference because it is a rebellion known as poor landless whites which led to the growth of slavery.
Slavery was a subject that was very common back in the days, it was described as a human being, being punished and owned by another human being. Slavery was recognizable in Chesapeake which in New England it was not. Religion was much a difference as well, while in New England, Massachusetts was dominated by Puritans. John Winthrop is known as one of the Puritan who he led several immigrants from New England. His famous quote was 'city upon a hill' what it meant was a metaphor saying that people that they would be like Jesus on the mount. In other words, it described any community or country that should be emulated. Roger W. was kicked out of New England along with Anne Hutchinson for challenging the clergy. John Winthrop was best friends with him until he did what he did. That led to the making of Rhode Island where the separation of religion freedom. As in Chesapeake religion differs from New England, it was not as common as it seemed to be, Christians were the only ones who were granted religious of freedom this rule was followed by Maryland's acts of Toleration. This act was supposed to protect the Catholics because the fear of being outnumbered by protectants. The Maryland Act was then to ensure religious toleration to all Christians, but not like before, it was just for Christians and that's it, no other religion was involved at this point, not even the Catholics.
Societal structure is how the people are described as and categorized within a group of people or where they 'belong' and nowhere else. New England's Societal structure was composed as Family units as in no single men and only easy ratios of families. Next was the Middle class they were able to pay off, pass across the Atlantic, then came the farmers, but the society mostly consist of small farmers. There were very few wealthy lands owners like Virginia and some people were classified to the bottom of social classes. Chesapeake's societal structure was made from few planters, which they were extremely wealthy because of the land they owned they were classified as high class. As we bring back the Indentured Servants were classified as a larger lower class because they may or may not live to see out indenture. A handful of small farmers were classified as the middle class because they lived through their period of indenture which is how it started out as their own.
