Frida Kahlo was an artist from Coyoacan, Mexico City, Mexico, in 1907. She had an unfortunate contraction of polio when she was six, which led to poor health at a young age. To get over this, she did many sports, like swimming and soccer. She grew up in her family home “The Blue House”, later known as Casa Azul. Frida became part of the National Prep school in Mexico City, which was very uncommon for her, due to the fact that only 35 other girls attended the school at the time.

There she met the renowned artist, Diego Rivera, and was convinced she would marry him someday. She soon joined a group of students that shared alike political and intellectual views. This is where she met her lover, Alejandro Gomez Arias. One day, while travelling on a bus, a collision occurred with a streetcar, causing a steel handrail to be impaled through her hip and the fracture of both her spine and pelvis. After this incident, she was forced to wear a fully body cast for 3 months, leaving her to stay in her bed. This is where she got into painting – to take her mind of the pain and kill time. The following year, she completed her first self-portrait, because her best reference is in fact herself. Later on, Frida reconnected with Diego Rivera and married in 1929. Due to Rivera’s work, they had to move a lot, sparking a new sense of realism to Frida Kahlo's paintings. It also inspired her to make more art of some of the places she visited. As the years went on, she broke up, she remarried, and her health continued to deteriorate. In 1950, Frida was diagnosed with gangrene in her right foot, causing her to stay in bed for 9 months. With her poor physical condition, Frida became depressed, which almost drove her to suicide. She made one last public appearance, and about a week after her 47th birthday, she perished into the heavenly abode.

Frida Kahlo’s work is constantly being celebrated and remembered. Her Casa Azul (Blue House) later became a museum dedicated to her art. Books and movies were made dedicated to her, one of these, Frida (2002) was released and won 6 Academy Awards, Best Makeup, and original score. Other ways she is celebrated is that her art is all over the web, and constantly biographies are being typed about this amazing woman all over the internet (and yes, there is A LOT); and Spanish Projects, like this one, are dedicated to this inspirational artist all over the world. Not only is Frida’s Kahlo’s art highly known of and celebrated, it is still very important to many Hispanic and Latinx communities. Her art is brought up again during a feminist movement in the 1970s, due to the fact that she was considered an icon of feminine creativity. Her art also has influenced others to follow their love of art and show it to the world. Also, Frida Kahlo helped bring about Surrealism in Mexico. Frida Kahlo is known as one of Mexico’s greatest artists and continues to be loved and appreciated everywhere, even here, on this paper.
