Analysis of the Refugee Story in 'Indise Out and Back Again'

Refugees are regular people who have to flee their home because of war in their country. While fleeing home their lives turn ”inside out” because of danger, separation from family and friends, and loss of belongings. While finding home their lives turn “back again” because of adapting to a new language, fitting in and making friends, and letting go of the past. Ha is a 10 year old girl who lives in Vietnam. The book 'Indise Out and Back Again' by Thanhha Lai relates to the refugee experience because their lives are often turned “Inside out”. Lai provides the perspective of a 10 year old girl, whose life is turned” Inside out” when she is forced to flee her home in Saigon, because of the Vietnam War, because the Communists took over Saigon. Her life finally turns”Back Again” when she gets to live with a new family in Alabama and learns a new language.

In the informational text “Panic Rises in Saigon, But Exits Are Few,” refugees experience death/loss of family/friends. In the text it says, “They could commit suicide if the worst came to pass. All refugees experience death and loss of a person.” The refugees experience a war that causes tragedy and lots of pain. The lives of refugees can also turn “inside out ” when finding home because they are struggling to learn a new language. Ha struggles to learn a new language in the poem English Above All, “Until you children master English, you must think, do, wish for nothing else.” page 117 Ha’s mother told them that they cannot have anything until they master the English language. In the text it says, “All day I practice squeezing hisses through my teeth. Whoever invented English must have loved snakes.” page 118. Ha is having a difficult time practicing her English.

Ha’s mother is telling her and her siblings that they must not think or do anything until they learn to master English.
