Analysis of The Breakfast Club as a Piece of Media
The title of this project will be “See the World with open eyes...” I think this title connects with all the recourses that I have used so far and will be using in my project. The steps that I have taken so far in this project is watching one of the 2 movies I decided on. I also started the reading and I have been taking little notes on the side in order to further assist me in my assignment. The first film I watched is The Breakfast Club by John Hughes. I decided to pick this movie because I have watched it before but just for comedy purposes. I wanted to re-watch this movie with a new perspective in mind and focus on some of the main points regarding this project as well. This movie is a good way to represent some of the stereotypes that are in our society today. I’m also really excited to watch Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom by Steven Spielberg.
I watched the trailer of this movie and it seems really interesting. Believe it or not, I haven’t watched this movie before or any of the Indiana Jones movies before. I am excited to start this movie with a neutral eye. I asked a few of my friends about their opinions on this movie and they were on both sides. Some said that this is one of their favorite movies out of all the Indiana Jones series and others said this movie was very boring and repetitive. Some areas I need to work on are advancing my responses to the research questions. The research questions were good itself, but I think that some of my answers will be a bit too simple. I know that I will have to go back and answer those questions with much more details in order to use them in my writing. I have created a schedule for myself to keep me on track with all the other work that I have coming up for my other classes. I will finish watching Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom by Sunday September 15 because by that time I will have my progress report submitted. While I wait to get feedback on my progress report, I have started to re-read the reading again and get as much more detail as I possibly can to further improve my writing and use in my final paper.
By studying media, we can learn how to use it to our advantages. As media has grown in our time, we realized that we get many pluses with it as well. We get to learn about many different ethnicity, race, nationality and sexuality. Learning about these are very important in life today because everyone will and should be treated the same. Also, in our world today, we can get access to the media whenever and wherever we want. Studying media is good for our self because it can help us in the future as well. Kellner talks about the 3 components of critical cultural studies. One thing he mentions in his article is the study of production and political economy. He says that this is important because it “can help determine the limits and range of political and ideological discourses and effects.” I agree with this because it is beneficial to understand what our economy is focusing on to better help our future. Another thing he mentions is Textual analysis. In this part of the article he explains “how texts function to produce meaning.” Understanding the outside concept of the text before getting into is very important to future understand the thinking of the writer.
Lastly, Kellner mentioned audience reception and use of media culture This part of the article explains that different types of culture, race etc. “Read texts differently, and cultural studies can illuminate why diverse audiences interpret texts in various, sometimes conflicting, ways.” This shows that our culture and race can affect the way analyze texts and other readings. Kellner’s insight helped me have another perspective over media. I thought that was not good for us however, after reading Kellner’s article it changed my idea on media. Kellner mentions that “For cultural studies, media culture provides the materials for constructing views of the world, behavior, and even identities.” Different types of media can show what human behavior and identity is in various forms. For example, in people who respect the dress code and dress appropriately are showing a positive image of themselves. On the other hand, people who are trying to put themselves out there by dressing inappropriately set a negative image in people's mind.
