A Neutral Discussion of the Peel Board of Education No Smoking Policy
The Peel Board of Education has a No Smoking Policy. This policy states that smoking is not permitted on Peel Board Properties. The Policy I agree with this policy because I am a non-smoker. However, I feel that my opinion just stands for one side of the group, the smokers, and the non-smokers. This policy has it good cause and bad cause, which sometimes create conflict between the two groups. In these four paragraphs, I will state the good causes and the bad causes, the reaction of people and the conclusion I decided on.
One of the main reasons why a no smoking policy should exist in the Peel Schools is to save work for the janitors. They do not have to clean up the extinguished cigarette inside the school. It decreases the chances of having a fire in the schools chemistry and science labs that are filled with flammable chemicals. Since the school is a smoke free zone, there will be fewer chances for lung sickness caused by smoking. It allows the non- smokers to breathe fresh air and discourage the new smokers because they have to walk to the sidewalk to smoke and influence the younger grade not to smoke. It also protects the non- smokers from breathing second hand smoke. If smokers smoke in the school, then they will be breathing the same air everyday, because the school has a poor ventilation system, which is unfair for everyone.
If the no smoking policy did not exist, the schools and students safety would be at extreme high risk. The smokers would create a crowd of people and smoke cigarette which generate air that cant be breathe into lungs. No one would have a choice because the smoke would flow through out the school. The school would likely have a higher insurance rate because of the chances of fire and accident would greatly increase. The janitors have to do more work, they have to clean up the extinguished. This would encourage the younger students to start smoking just to join the group. When under age smokers ran out of cigarette, they would bother shoppers and higher-grade students to buy the cigarettes for them or give them money. When they do not have the money, they become bullies and pick on the younger grades for their money. But if the smokers are allowed to smoke in the school, they would get to class on time, unlike what is happening right now. People are getting late to class everyday because they would go for a smoke with their friends and to hang out with them.
Most smokers react strongly about this issue because they have to move to the sidewalk in order to smoke during lunches and between periods. This causes them to be late for class. They dont think that is fair for them. On the other hand, the non-smokers feel very comfortable and protected. They can breathe fresh air in the school, and do not have to tolerate the second hand smoke, which leads to sickness and absentee.
My conclusion is to keep the no smoking policy because the majority of students are non-smokers. Their health and safety are the most important. This will not be fair to the smokers, but it will encourage them to quit since it is better for their health.
