Unnoted Benefits of Censorship in Media That Protect Us

The topic given to me was to push Media Censorship in the essay. Media Censorship is a form of censorship but specifically in the media. An example of Media censorship is the rating you see on tv like “PG” which means parental guidance. On the topic of social media could be something on a website that says you have to be a certain age or up to view the content of that post. It doesn't mean that everything on that website is inappropriate, it just means that a specific post was inappropriate.

The reason why I chose pro for this topic is that there are a lot of things I was exposed to when I was little, not because of my parents but simply because I was not old enough to understand. For Instance, there could have been a game I played that had a lot of violence and could impact me for the rest of my life. It is always important to let kids and adults know whether it's worth exposing themselves to something they're going to regret. For example, my dad watched Jaws when he was 12 or 13, and regardless of whether it was scary now or not convinced my dad not to step foot in an ocean or pool for a couple of years.

On the topic of games and electronics, I love listening to music and a lot of times the music I listen to wasn't always appropriate maybe it was because I thought I was cool or I didn't know better but at least now on websites like Spotify and apple music use the “E” symbol to mark explicit and have parental settings that can keep kids who shouldn't be hearing that kind of music.

Something a lot of people don't know about me is that I love to read. It's probably one of my favorite things to do. And something that isn't as common in books but should be is rating systems. A lot of times you might have to look up the ratings on different websites because they're just not in the books. However, on websites like amazon you can read the reviews directly from their website versus buying a book at costco or a library and people might not know about the book.

I think we really need more media censorship because general censorship occurs in a variety of different media, including speech, books, music, films, and other arts, the press, radio, television, and the Internet for a variety of claimed reasons including national security, to control obscenity, pornography, and hate speech, to protect children or other vulnerable groups, to promote or restrict political or religious views, and to prevent slander and libel.

To me social media has always been a priority. I have always wanted to know whats the latest thing and I was always able to find out through social media. WIth that being said social media has a good side and a bad side. The bad side is that people can get sucked in want to look at bad even violtent things. My parents always said dont let social media take over your life and for most people my age it definitely can make a big difference on a childs life.

The results indicated that censorship, regardless of the attractiveness of the censor, caused the potential audience to change their attitudes toward the position to be advocated by the communication and to increase their desire to hear that communication. Censorship may not always be fully understood or appreciated by those it is designed to 'protect', but it is sometimes needed for the building of the core values of youth.
