The Reasons Of People Using Plagiarism
Plagiarism is something that happens every day and it can be from the smallest thing like taking a few words from a small article or from bigger things like copying and pasting a paragraph that was found online and using it on your own, it is wrong, and no one should do it. (THE) Plagiarism is the act of taking someone else’s work and using it as yours without asking for consent or purchasing the information. (DEF) Everyone (Aud) knows that it is wrong so why is it that people plagiarize even though it is a nation issue and it is done every day? (RHET?) Before stealing one’s ideas, one must think, what if they were the ones that were being stolen from. What if one day you uploaded an image and uploaded it to Twitter or Facebook, and the next month you see your picture in front of a magazine and having millions of likes on someone else’s article without giving you any sorts of credit. (PAPP) If this happened to anyone they would be upset and angry for what just happen. The reason that I think people plagiarize is because people are not caring enough on what they are writing, and they are too lazy to think of new ideas. (WAR) The fact of one not being able to think about what to say doesn’t give one the right to steal someone’s work. (SUM)
When analyzing a survey that was done by my fellow class mates on what is the most likely reason people plagiarize 28. 28% said that it was because of lack of interest. 25. 5% of the students think that it is lack of knowledge about how to accurately cite sources, 23. 3% think that it is lack of self-confidence in one’s own work, 16. 16% say that people plagiarize because of the competition for good grades, acceptance, votes or rewords. (CCLM) Also 7. 07% says it is because of lack of planning to prepare citations and 0% thought that people don’t plagiarize. (EVD) This leads me to think that the main reason why people plagiarize is because they are not passionate about the topic that they are being taught. (RSP) This makes sense because if you are being forced to do something you are not going to be interested in the topic and you are not going to learn. I think that the second percentage is also worth looking at because it came in second by 3%, the lack of knowledge on how to accurately cite sources is also a reason why people plagiarize. I think that this also makes a lot of sense because not everyone has the same knowledge on plagiarism, some people are taught at a young age while others are taught the very minimal, but everyone should know that it is against the law and they should look for help if they don’t know how to cite a source. (WAR)
I watched the speech that Melania Trump said and then I watched the Michelle Obama speech and I concluded that they said almost exactly the same words. Michelle said that speech first meaning that Melania Trump plagiarized. Melania Trump someone who is supposed to represent our country, plagiarizes and no action is done to her. This should not be right, and this just proves that even though you plagiarize there might not be consequences leading to that it can happen again. (WAR) On another survey that was done by fellow classmates the question was, is a person likely to keep on plagiarizing if they start plagiarizing. 46. 46% said that yes, once someone plagiarizes they are not going to stop because once you start it is too hard to stop. Then 29. 29% said that no, they will stop plagiarizing if they get caught. Then for the same question 14. 14% says that no, they will stop plagiarizing because they will grow out of thinking it’s okay and 10. 10% say yes, they will not stop plagiarizing even if they get caught. (EVD) I think that once someone plagiarizes they are more likely to do it especially if there is no punishment, once someone starts doing something it is hard to stop, (CCLM) there for us as citizens should neglect from plagiarizing and should spread that plagiarism isn’t the way to go and should teach it to the younger generation. (RSP)(SUM)
I think that people plagiarize because there is too much competition out there and everyone is trying to be the best. (CCLM)(WAR) When proposing the question of why do you think competition contributes to people plagiarizing to fellow college students, 42% say that people try to win by any means necessary, 27% say that people are afraid of rejection, 22% say that people get depressed when having to compete for grades and 9% say that competition isn’t a factor to plagiarism. (EVD) If one is always going to try and win by any means necessary, what will happen when they don’t have the resources to plagiarize, such as having to write an essay in class without using the internet. This student will fail leading them to be sad and depressed. This will later on lead them to plagiarize more because they want to do better, then once they graduate school they will work in a company. They will plagiarize on the job leading to the company getting sued because that person plagiarized, leading to that person getting fired and having to look for another job. Then once that person finds the next job the process will happen again because that person thinks that their ideas aren’t good enough to compete against other people. (RSP)(SUM)
Plagiarism is something that must be taught by teachers, so that they can show students how harmful it is to plagiarize and to show the damages of what it does. (CCLM) I think that in side of school especially in the middle to high school range students are not being taught what plagiarism is and how to cite a source. (WAR) I asked a girl in high school if she knew was taught what plagiarism is and if she did when did she first learn it. She said that she learned it in 8 grade and that all she knew was to not copy and paste things from the internet. Then I asked her if she knew how to cite a source and she said that she didn’t know how to. (EVD) I also asked another woman that has already graduated college if she knew what plagiarism is and if she knew how to cite a source. She told me that she didn’t know what plagiarism was until she got into high school and she did know how to cite a source but that she had to learn on her own from a book that she had to purchase. (EVD) If no one is taught and fully understands what plagiarism is then how do, we expect people not to plagiarize. Schools at a young age should teach students what plagiarism is, how to cite a source and give classes on why plagiarism is so bad. (RSP) If one doesn’t know what plagiarism is or how to cite a source correctly they will receive large fines and even jail time. (SUM)
Plagiarism happens from the smallest thing and it is so easy to do, lots of people know the consequences but this doesn’t stop them. (SUM) There are many reasons why people plagiarize, and statistics show us that most people plagiarize because they don’t care enough about the topic that is being talked about. I think that this and students not being taught what plagiarism is (WAR), are the reason why so many people plagiarize. (RHET?) I didn’t know that the main reason why people plagiarize is because they are not interested in the topic, but I believe that the way to stop plagiarism is by enforcing the consequences. (NCI) If someone plagiarizes they should get a large fine, I believe that this will stop people from plagiarizing and will secure the work of everyone.
