The Mood Of The Animal Farm By George Orwell
George Orwell (June 25, 1903 to January 21, 1950), born Eric Arthur Blair, was a novelist, essayist and critic best known for his novels Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four. He was a man of strong opinions who addressed some of the major political movements of his times, including imperialism, fascism and communism.
George Orwell is only a pen name. The man behind the classics Animal Farm and 1984 was named Eric Arthur Blair and was born to a middle class family living in Bengal in 1903. Eric Blair got his first taste of class prejudice at a young age when his mother forced him to abandon his playmates, which were plumber's children (Crick 9). He could then play only with the other children in the family, all of whom were at least five years older or younger than Eric (Crick 12). This created in him a sense of alienation that plagued him all his life and seems to be reflected in the bitter decay and loneliness he later expressed in his novel 1984. As he moved around unsuccessfully from job to job, he never really developed a sense of self-worth. His childhood self-esteem had already been scarred by his bed wetting habit, of which Orwell Biographer Jeffrey Meyers writes that it 'was only the first of endless episodes that made Orwell feel guilty: he was poor, he was lazy and a failure, ungrateful and unhealthy, disgusting and dirty minded, weak, ugly, cowardly'
In 1945, Orwell's 'Animal Farm' was published. A political fable set in a farmyard but based on Stalin's betrayal of the Russian Revolution, it made Orwell's name and ensured he was financially comfortable for the first time in his life. 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' was published four years later. Set in an imaginary totalitarian future, the book made a deep impression, with its title and many phrases - such as 'Big Brother is watching you', 'newspeak' and 'doublethink' - entering popular use. By now Orwell's health was deteriorating and he died of tuberculosis on 21 January 1950.
The target audience of the author is the general public. He wanted the people to know about communism, what it is and how it affects the lives of other people. He used literature, to spread the idea, knowledge that he has so that people would be aware of would be the result of a particular matter. The book is a fictional story about the rebellion of the animals among humans. An Old Major gathered the animals of the farm to have a meting in the barn. He recounts the vision of utopia where his fellow creatures own the land with the means of production and no longer a slaves of humans. Before his long dream come true and for a short while, all animals are equal. But the clever pigs educate their selves and soon learn how to extend their power, inevitably at the expense of the rest of the community. They have said that “all animals are equal” and “four legs are good, two legs are bad” but the pigs have violated the rule and revised it in order that the other animals would not be angry and couldn’t whine of what the pigs were doing.
Animal farm the author simplifies the polemic topic and academic point of view. The author used the animals as an active participants of what is considered an unjust system. He used no legal jargon or complicated words in the story so the readers would understand what is happening in it because the author used the most direct and simple metaphors. It breaks down the notion that corruption systems are a natural complex and for these reasons the origins are equally unbelievable. As I can see from the beginning the story, it shows the cycle of what animals are going through. It is a book that spells out what for us is obviously unrighteous. It begins in a story of injustice. The owner of a farm, Mr. Jones is an irresponsible, a drunkard man with no consideration to the animals and let them starve. So that the Old Major, was aa prize-winning boar, who was tired of all the ill-treatment that they experience, he spoke out about the perfect utopia that he foresaw wherein the animals were neither controlled or oppressed by humans. He saw their freedom from the humans. And it soon became a dream of all animals that they wanted to make come true. They build a violent revolution against Mr. Jones. He was executed and the animals took over the farm which we can now see the metaphor of Bolsheviks. The absolute power corrupts and that even the most idealistic of revolution can be ruin by self-serving authorities. The revolution of Animals is triggered by the abusive actions which they are used as food by humans, the result of the revolution was not a utopia instead a system even worse than the rule of the human farmer. Napoleon in a story is not a democratic leader, he is a dictator. The author discuss the role of non-democratic leader. In the story, Napoleon is a pig as well as a leader. He uses his power to frighten and to control the animals. He creates lies, uses a propaganda and violence to keep his authority. He abuse the ideology of Animalism with his lies.
From the scene of Windmill, Boxer fought bravely but he got injured. His injury started to get worse and it later on affects his work. One day, there was a slaughter car came by to the farm and took Boxer. The animals are shocked when they saw Boxer was sent to death, not to heal. Napoleon explained tat Boxer had sent to a veterinary hospital not to a slaughter house. He stated that the car was belonged to the hospital where Boxer died peacefully. Afterwards a barrel of whisky came to Animal Farm. It shows that Napoleon had sent Boxer to a slaughter house and bought whisky with exchange of Boxer’s meat.
The overall theme of a story is Totalitarianism, totalitarianism is founded on oppression of the individual and the lower class. Those who are holding their power in totalitarian regimes care only about one thing and that is maintaining their power by their own good. In the story of Napoleon rise to power is most explicit of showing a strong disapproval of totalitarianism in the Soviet Union. The author used Animal Farm ti criticize all totalitarian regimes. In the novel, the overthrow of a human oppressor Mr. jones by a democratic movement of animals quickly gives away of combination of power among the pigs which is much like the Soviet intelligentsia, the pigs build themselves as the ruling class in the new society. The struggle between Leon Trotsky and Stalin emerges in the rivalry between the pigs Snowball and Napoleon. In both the historical and fictional cases, the idealistic but politically less powerful figure of Trotsky and Snowball is forced to leave from the revolutionary state by the malicious and violent take over of power Stalin and Napoleon.
The novel illustrates how classes that are first coordinate in the face of a common enemy, as the animals are against the humans, may become internally divided when that enemy is eliminated. When Mr. Jones had banish, it began to lost his power, and it is only so long before the next oppressor assumes totalitarian control. The natural division between intellectual and physical labor quickly comes to express itself as a new set of class divisions, with the “brainworkers” as the pigs claim to be using their superior intelligence to manipulate society to their own benefit. The story is told from the perspective of the common animals as a whole, loyal and hardworking, When presented with a dilemma wherein Boxer prefers not to puzzle out the implications of various possible actions but instead to repeat to himself, “Napoleon is always right.” Animal Farm demonstrates how the inability or unwillingness to question authority condemns the working class to suffer the full limit of the ruling class’s oppression. The Animal Farm demonstrates the idea that power always corrupts. The novel's heavy use of foreshadowing, especially in the opening chapter, creates the sense that the events of the story are unavoidable. Not only is Napoleon’s rise to power inevitable, the story strongly suggests that any other possible ruler would have been just as bad as Napoleon. Although Napoleon is more eager to have power than Snowball, plenty of evidence exists to prove that Snowball would have been just as a corrupt ruler.
The story helps us to know and understand what is happening in our society. It tells us that no one’s equal despite of saying it with or without the law. Not everyone would want to have an ordinary power, and there are some people who have a mind like Napoleon or Stalin, which would use their power to manipulate and abuse the people. The author wants to inform each and everyone to be smart and open our minds in what is happening, what would happen and how it would affect our society. The book wants us to know that people are not airheaded that they can also stand on their own without a corrupt leader.
The author uses the book to inform the people about communism. To inform the people about it he used the literature in writing using the animals as the active participants of the story. He’s not directly stating the information he wanted to spread but he is not using complicated words to demonstrate it. At first when you read the story you would think that it is for children because of the characters that the author had used, he used animals as the characters and pigs as a protagonist or the main character who appeared most of the chapter. But as you can see it is not, the story refers to a Russian revolution and it has a deep meaning. The story is easy to read because the author didn’t use any complicated words that only smart people can understand and would know the story behind it. The author wrote the book between November 1943 and February 1944, when the UK was in its wartime alliance with the Soviet Union against Nazi Germany and the British people and intelligentsia held Stalin in high esteem, a phenomenon that the author hated.
George Orwell has made a two most well-known novel. These are the “1984” and “Animal Farm”, these two have a different societal and governmental extremes, but both serves as a warning for the readers. In 1984, the book is about a world that locked in a state of eternal war, where the is a dictatorship in a government and mistreatment to people and love is forbidden. In tgus book they use technology wise, which they use the technology to watch the people on what they were doing, so that the people will not rebel and society would do want the government's wants and it would stay as it is. On a first page of a book, we can see the tagline “Big Brother is Watching You”, it shows that government controlled the people or whatever they does and it shows how the government intimidate the people to listen and do whatever the government tells them to do. There were a “telescreen” which the government can see and supervise the people. They indicates how powerful they are, and can see and hear each individual. In this book, it a general warning against the danger of following a dictatorial government.
In Animal Farm, animals are forced to do what the humans want, so they do the rebellion, but after while they are subtly betrayed by their leader with his lies—the pigs, which end up to be bad as a humans. The rule of society has being rewritten to justify the actions of the leader. The environment has no change, where the place is a small space which is the farm. It is so simple and undeveloped technology wise, a different society from what the book 1984 has. The pigs are the one who control the farm. When the animals were working on the windmill, Napoleon announced that there will a work on Sunday and that is voluntary, but who ever does nit volunteer will reduced his food in a half. The farm is the environment of a novel in which it creates a small society that easy to control because there is less places to go, so that it would be easy for the pigs to supervise the other animals, in this way they had to control the animals, so if there were animals wants to get away of a totalitarianism they knew about it, and they could deal about it appropriately.
The book is useful for those people who doesn’t know what is communism and how it affects the society, for those people who doesn’t know that they were experiencing the said matter. The novel has a good contribution in a society and the author used his knowledge and his ability to write what he knows.
