The Importance of Bravery for the Survival in The Maze Runner

Being brave both physically and mentally brave and working hard can bring success very easily. It isn’t something that someone is born with, but rather they are skills that develop overtime as you proceed onto them. The science-fiction book Maze Runner, written by James Dashner, illustrates the gladers (teenagers in the maze) trapped in a maze in which they heavily want to escape so they will be able to survive and live. In this book it is illustrated that bravery is needed in order for one to survive the grating maze.

The main character and protagonist of the story is 16 years old and five feet and nine inches tall named Thomas. He is a very passionate character who fights with his life in the maze and does his best to escape the maze. Thomas is considered a hero in the book while he fought for other gladers lifes and tried his personal best to escape every single Glader out of the maze. The book expresses Thomas as a brave, intelligent, and a hard working teenager. There are multiple scenes throughout the book that show Thomas is a brave character but the scene that had my heart beating faster than a race car’s engine was when Thomas went to go both Minho and Alby. “Thomas knew he had no choice. He moved. Forward. He squeezed past the connecting rods at the last second and stepped into the Maze. The walls slammed shut behind him, the echo of its boom bouncing off the ivy-covered stone like mad laughter.”(Dashner 112 In other words, it shows how Thomas risked his life to go save both Minho and Alby. I know I would never be able to have the guts to save someone's life like how Thomas did.

At the same time, Thomas is a very intelligent person. The author shows how Thomas uses pencils, pens, and wax paper to draw on the walls to figure out the code. Shockinglyby doing that, Thomas figured out the code for the maze. Not only is Thomas a brave and intelligent teenager; he also is a hard worker. It’s demonstrated in the novel that Thomas works hard so he can be alive. “‘You get lazy, you get sad. Start givin' up. Plain and simple.’”(Dashner 77) The author demonstrates that Thomas must work hard so he won’t die. This applies in real life because it shows we must work hard for the things we want to achieve. Overall Thomas is a character we all can learn from because the traits he possessed were the traits that made him succeed and escape the maze including being brave, intelligent, and a hard worker.

The gladers are all arrived at the maze. No-one knows how or why these teenagers got into the maze besides that they all have to survive. All these gladers have no memories and all are confused. We figure that both Newt and Alby have control of the glade and all the gladers want to find the code so they can get out of the maze. Later on in the book, Thomas takes leadership as he is one of the main gladers who helps everyone out and is the different mind-setted one. In the middle of the story, many gladers pass away because they try to kill the grievers (the monsters behind the wall) with weapons but didn’t work unfortunately. From this horrific event, there are only 21 gladers left alive.

Towards the end of the book Thomas finally figures the code out to escape the maze. Once Thomas figured out the code to escape the maze, my heart rate went to a regular humans heart rate! It is safe to state that the gladers survived and escaped the maze but the ones who were only left alive.
