The Impact Of Overpopulation On The Planet
As for me, I am an international student who comes from China. And China as a country that has one of the largest populations in the world has been facing the problem of overpopulation for a period of time. The reason that overpopulation is being a serious world’s issue now because it brings s series of troubles. The impact of overpopulation will be further discussed in the following part.
First of all, overpopulation will gradually destroy ecological balance. According to the research, 10,000 years ago, humans made up 1% of the weight of vertebrate land animals: the rest were all wild. Today, wild animals make up just 1%. The other 99% is humans, our farmed animals, and our pets. The large reduction of animal resources such as birds and fish is also a warning. For the climate, one of the most noticeable signs is global warming. It is a massive environmental problem that has been found and realized by scientists, and people are getting to know that from social media. The melting of glaciers which is impacted by global warming has resulted in a global sea level rise. In addition, the environmental space suitable for human survival is limited.
If there are so many people in one place, the living place for the human being will be damaged. To name a few, air pollution, water shortages, and discharge of excessive waste. Most of them are caused by deforestation and industrial activity, which are people’s daily work.
Secondly, overpopulation has a deep effect on another issue that we are confronting of now, which called aging of population. It represents that the elderly generation has a large base and a fast growth rate in plenty of places around the world. The world’s population is ageing at such a rate that the over 60s now make up over 10%, and by 2050 this is likely to rise to over 20%. On the one hand, the lack of employment opportunity is getting more and more less recently because of the unimproved aging population. And if the social system of caring and supporting the older does not work properly, the pressure on young generation will be increasing, because they do not only have to work outside, but also take care of elders in their families. Therefore, their quality of life will be reduced. On the other hand, as the proportion of the elderly population increases, families and governments pay more for the elderly in medical and health care. Treatment and management of these health problems require high costs.
Thirdly, there is another disadvantage of overpopulation, which is education problem. Nowadays, education is being the most important requirement in our society. It defined by the act or process of imparting or acquiring particular knowledge or skills. People achieve better development by a complete educational system. However, overpopulation might not be helpful for that. Schools increase their levels of application because there are a large number of students want to go in. When the competitive pressure become too high, serious nervousness and excessive anxiety occur, it affects kids’ daily life, also kills their creativity and imagination, which certainly causes loss of talents.
Personally, I believe that overpopulation is doing more harm than good on the present day in our society. However, there are several ways to solve this problem. For example, changing policy is a good method to improve overpopulation, the government has to build a solid economic foundation in order to achieve the overall social progress, improve the social security, welfare and services.
