The Description Of The Book "Dirt", Written By Denise Gosliner Orenstein

The book Dirt, written by Denise Gosliner Orenstein, has a main character named Yonder. Her mother died when she was little and because of this, she can’t speak anymore. At school, she gets bullied but she doesn’t let the bullies get to her. One day she meets her new best friend which she named Dirt. He is a Shetland pony that seems to understand what she’s thinking. The protagonist is Trudy Trumpet. She is a woman who always makes sure that Yonder is doing okay and going to school. Yonder thinks she’s annoying sometimes but she understands that Trudy is just looking out for her. The antagonist would be Yonder’s father. He is a man who makes sure that Yonder is happy but at the same time he drinks a lot.

The setting takes place in Vermont. This story is placed in early fall and suggested it’s the beginning of the school year in the month of September. Yonder lives in a little, crooked house with dark windows and Dirt lives outside her home. Throughout the book the weather the characters mostly encounter are rainy and cloudy days. The landscape is usually described as lots of hills and curvy roads.

The main conflict would be when Trudy Trumpet found out that Yonder was hiding a pony in her room. Trudy called the police over and before they got there, Yonder told Dirt to run away and he did. Yonder was upset but she did it to keep him safe. When the police came, they found out that Yonder’s dad wasn’t there. They checked his room and found beer bottles laying on the floor and they told Yonder that she is getting foster parents. She was angry and started to miss and worry about Dirt.

In the morning, Yonder started to think about a plan to save Dirt. She told her foster parents that she was going to school but she was really going to go find Dirt. She found out that Dirt was at a petting zoo. It took her almost all day to get to the zoo. The zoo looked abandoned and also looked like no one was taking care of it. Yonder wasn’t able to find Dirt but then she heard a scream in the woods. Yonder followed the sound and came across a trailer. She looked inside and saw Dirt. She had to break down the door to get him. After saving him, she realized that she hurt herself and walked with Dirt to the vet to fix up her injury.

After the vet helped out Yonder with her injury, she returned back to her foster parents. She was able to keep Dirt but as long as he was taken care of properly. Yonder found out that her father was in the hospital. A few days later, Yonder’s father sent her a note saying that he was worried about her and is getting better. He said when he gets out of the hospital he would make Dirt a shed out back. Yonder was happy and relieved to hear from her father. After reading the letter, Yonder realized that it started snowing outside. She went outside and played in the snow. She would soon be able to reunite with her father. A quiet person can be different than you think. In the story, Yonder has an unusual disorder where she can’t speak, but She is able to communicate with people without talking to go on a big adventure to save her best friend.
