Introduction

The aim of this assignment is to submit a piece of written work that demonstrates my understanding of the principals and practices of personal effectiveness which include:

  • Self-awareness
  • Time management
  • Goal setting
  • Stress management
  • Positive management
  • Reflection and evaluation of learning.

For all of the above principals I will explain what it is and give an example how I relate it to my life and the study of makeup artistry. For the principal self-awareness, I will include a completed SWOT analysis as a practical demonstration of my understanding of the principal based on my skills audit. For skills and goals, I will use any charts or task sheets that I have completed in class. By the end of this assignment I hope to have a better understanding of the principals and practices of personal effectiveness.

Self-awareness

Self-awareness is tracked back to 1972 when Psychologists Shelley Duval and Robert Wicklund’s developed the theory of self-awareness. They proposed that:“when we focus our attention on ourselves, we evaluate and compare our current behaviour to our internal standards and values. We become self-conscious as objective evaluators of ourselves. ” { Duval and Wicklund’s 1972, accessed on October 6th 2018}Self-awareness is the ability to self-control. It is about paying attention to our state of mind and heart. Self-awareness is very important because it is the key to emotional intelligence. It is being able to monitor our emotions, being at peace with who we are and managing our thoughts, emotions, and behaviour. Self-aware people are in good psychological health and have a positive, healthy outlook on life. They also have better life experience and are more understanding towards other people. I completed three exercise’s so I could be self-aware, these were:

  • The wheel of life
  • SWOT analysis
  • Learning styles

The wheel of life is a series of trans migratory cycles of birth, death and rebirth, in other words rating things important in your life. {Merriam Webster, accessed 6th October 2018}. I completed my own wheel on life relating to my personal life and makeup artistry life. The SWOT analysis helps an individual discover their strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. I completed a SWOT analysis of my own strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.

Strengths

  • Organised
  • Supportive friends.
  • Internet

Weaknesses

  • Stress

Opportunities

  • Work opportunities.
  • Chance to travel.
  • Social and leisure opportunities.

Threats

  • Losing Susi payments.
  • Unemployed.
  • Lack of time.

There are three types of learning styles: visual, kinesthetics and auditory. During class time, I completed a survey in order to identify my learning style. I am a kinesthetics learner therefore, I learn by touching and doing. Kinesthetics learners need to be active and take breaks, they speak with their hands and with gestures, they remember what was done, but have difficulty recalling what was said or seen, they find reasons to move when bored, they rely on what they can directly perform, they can easily get up and move around, they are uncomfortable in classrooms where they lack opportunities for hands-on experience and they appreciate physically expressed encouragement. This is particular important for a makeup artist as one can only improve my practising.

Time Management. A useful everyday item that everybody can use to add extra time into their day in order to complete more tasks. It is extremely useful for a makeup artist and myself. It divides time evenly for family, friends, social activities and college, therefore it manages your time effectively. Excellent time management helps us to have more time for ourselves, be relaxed without having to stress, be organised and plan effectively. It is very helpful for an individual who has a very busy life because it sets out goals, helps one plan effectively, fulfil their actions, can save time, be organised and gets one’s priorities straight. Being able to manage your time has many benefits such as: less stress, better self-esteem, an excellent work and life balance and increased productivity. There are eight very important elements to time management:

  • Being aware of your time and aware of time wasters you surround yourself with.
  • Self-management.
  • Priorities.
  • Management of your own resources and self-management.
  • Goal setting.
  • Measurement of achievement
  • Planning. In order to have good time management certain key principles have to be followed:
  • Have a good objective.
  • Focus when working in order to achieve your desired objectives.
  • Make a list of your activities before your day begins.
  • Get priorities straight to achieve more in the same day.
  • Reserve time for activities.
  • Eliminate at least one-time waster from your life each week.

Three steps must be followed to manage your time:

  1. Set out clear, simple goals.
  2. Make a schedule and try to stick to it.
  3. Study your plan and revise it weekly.

Stress Management

Stress is a horrible feeling of guilt that is very frustrating. However, stress can be avoided by these key steps:

  • Have a healthy diet, one that includes plenty of vitamin C as its very good for the immune system.
  • Exercise 30 minutes a day. It helps your body produce endorphins, which make you feel good.
  • Meditate 10 minutes a day using good breathing techniques because it relaxes the mind.
  • Take breaks
  • Get a pet dog
  • Stop smoking
  • Get enough sleep
  • Try to think positive as much as possible. You learn from any mistakes you make in life. Plan ahead to avoid the mistake again.

Stress is a major issue for makeup artists, simply because they worry if their business will succeed, if they can not afford incoming stock and finally the fear of being unemployed. I myself become very stressed over money, however I am learning money isn’t the be all and end all and how to budget.

Positive Management

This means thinking clearly and effectively with a healthy mind. Stress can prevent it, but to avoid stress you should:

  • Have a healthy diet, one that includes plenty of vitamin C as its very good for the immune system.
  • Exercise 30 minutes a day. It helps your body produce endorphins, which make you feel good.
  • Meditate 10 minutes a day using good breathing techniques because it relaxes the mind.
  • Take breaks
  • Get a pet dog
  • Stop smoking
  • Get enough sleep
  • Try to think positive as much as possible.

You learn from any mistakes you make in life. Plan ahead to avoid the mistake again.

I try my best to think positive in order to live a happy life. For a makeup artist being positive is very important because having a positive mind makes it easier to communicate, think and be politer. Reflection and evaluation of learning. I have learnt many things from this assignment from stress management, goal setting and time management to name a few. I have learnt that I am a Kinesthetics learner and discovered areas I have free time. These results mean I learn by actively doing things and I have no reason to be stressed because I have plenty of free time.
