History of the Cuban-American Relationship
The relationship between the U.S and Cuba in the 1960’s was a complicated one at that. Cuba and the U.S went over 50 years without speaking. The U.S went through 10, that’s right 10 different presidents before one president decided it was enough. Although Cuba was just 100 miles south off the coast of Florida, we did not speak. The cuban prime minister Fidel Castro, decided to buy oil from the U.S.S.R, but when U.S owned oil refineries did not agree and go with his plan he seized them, in return we decided to stop all importations of cuban sugar to the U.S. (Claire Suddath) This is the start to our 50 year long feud with Cuba.
The relationship we have with Cuba stayed the same for nearly 50 years, That was until the year of 2014, when President Obama decided to out an end to this tragic relationship and turn it around for the better. Before this, Cuban Americans were not even able to visit their families, but Barack Obama decided to re-visit these restrictions, in which he decided to lift the restriction and allow people to visit Cuba. Although, the economic embargo with Cuba was not changed, we have made significant improvements with our relationship to Cuba and will continue to do so.
The relationship between the U.S and Cuba has long been complicated. But, in recent years we have made strides in repairing the relationship to allow American people and easier life. For instance one positive effect of our current relationship with Cuba would be that now, with proper documentation and prior approval people are able to visit Cuba. It also allows Cuban-Americans the right to go back to where there roots are and visit their family and loved ones.
Another positive effect of our current relationship is that Cuban business are now able to get more business from American people as well as training from American companies to allow their Cuban companies to grow. A negative effect would have to be although we have repaired much pf our relationship, the economic embargo has not changed and as of right now there are no plans which means that Americans can not outsource from Cuba nor can Cuba outsource from us. Another negative would be that when one visits Cuba you are only able to bring back $400 worth of stuff and only a quarter can be made up of alcohol and tobacco products, which affects some of our society because of peoples loves for cuban cigars and alcohol.
