Hippies And Their Ability To Not Look At The Surface
Sometimes, looking at the surface of things does not represent the meaning or meaning of things. Some people's appearance can't be changed. Although they look terrible or scary, sometimes their hearts are purer than others. That's exactly what hippies are like. These young people who like peace and flowers, have long hair, have beard longer than others and wear different clothes from those of that era, although they look different then others, doing things difference than others, but they yearn for more noble things than us.
On March 8, 1965, two US Marine Battalions landed on Danang Beach, recording the first official US military involvement in the Vietnam War. Over the next few years, hundreds of thousands of Americans participated in massive national protests as a result of ominous intervention in US conflicts and became frustrated and angry with the terrible bloodshed in Southeast Asia. Even the anti-war movement began on the university campus in the early 1960s, but the war hippie anti-cultural movement emerged on television in the late 1960s and became involved in the American Vietnam War. With its long hair and beard, colorful style, use of psychedelic, love for rock music, ecologically conscious lifestyle, its unique rebel brand will have a lasting impact on the United States in the coming decades.
At that time the young people had long hair and they had free love. They were a group of people who showed the road to peace. In order to love each other, they believe that it is important to acknowledge each other who they are, but in that era no one saw it except the hippies, they only saw strange criminals. Hippies freestyle showing on their fashion. Hippies' clothes are also closely related to nature. As crystal schwanke said: “ Hippies were the natural outgrowth of the Beat movement in the 1950s. Interested in an alternative lifestyle and rebelling against a society grown increasingly conformist and repressive, they were focused on freedom and getting back to nature.” Those hippies love natural peace do not want war to happen. However, people at that time did not find this. They only saw it's ridiculous that human beings return to primitive. When it comes to people's feeling that hippies are very primitive, people also see that hippies' lives are closely related to flowers. It's strange that who will go out in the clothes with flowers every day.
Hippies like flowers, flowers are a symbol of the hippie movement. There is also a word call flower child, “Flower child originated as a synonym for hippie, especially among the idealistic young people who gathered in San Francisco and the surrounding area during the Summer of Love in 1967. It was the custom of 'flower children' to wear and distribute flowers or floral-themed decorations to symbolize ideals of universal belonging, peace, and love. The mass media picked up on the term and used it to refer in a broad sense to any hippie.” (Allen Ginsberg, 1965) Nothing can represent peace and love like flowers, they are everywhere. Floral patterns are on the tops and dresses, and flower patches are on skirts and jeans. Real flowers are worn on the hair, and images of flowers are painted on the face. Hippies believe that in the face of ugly phenomena in the world, it is important to show as much natural beauty as possible. On this basis, hippies also like to have flowers on their clothes, the more the better. Hippie clothes are usually made of natural materials. At the same time, they also like any hand-made clothes, which shows that they love nature. Although the costumes are very different from those of the day, hippies still love their costumes. In the beginning, the appreciation of hippies' behaviors affected the clothing industry, and designers found that they got a lot of inspiration from hippies. What hippies do abnormally is not only in their clothes, but also in their behavior.
In their behavior hippies insists on non-violence and love, Even if they were treated coldly. A common term is “make love, not war”, also called “flower”. They insist on openness and tolerance instead of the restrictions and rules found in middle-class societies. Hippies often practice open sex and live in different types of family groups. They usually seek spiritual guidance, sometimes in various combinations, from sources other than Christian traditions in Judaism, especially Buddhism and other Oriental religions. Astrology is very popular. This period is usually called the age of Aquarius. Hippie promotes the use of hallucinogens, especially marijuana ( “Marijuana, crude drug composed of the leaves and flowers of plants in the genus Cannabis. Marijuana’s effects vary, depending upon the strength and amount consumed, the setting in which it is taken, and the experience of the user. Psychological effects tend to predominate, with the user commonly experiencing a mild euphoria. Alterations in vision and judgment result in distortions of time and space. Acute intoxication may occasionally induce visual hallucinations, anxiety, depression, extreme variability of mood, paranoid reactions, and psychoses lasting four to six hours.” )
( Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2019) and LSD “A kind of drug, after administration, LSD can be absorbed readily from any mucosal surface—even the ear—and acts within 30 to 60 minutes. Its effects usually last for 8 to 10 hours, and occasionally some effects persist for several days. Two serious side effects are the prolongation and transient reappearance of the psychotic reaction.which has proven to be a way to increase awareness in the so-called first course.” (John Philip Jenkins, 2019) Even if the side effects of these drugs are serious, they still think drug is good for them. Leary said, 'Expand your consciousness and find ecstasy and revelation within.' It's a bit too much, but it's also a manifestation of what they think is freedom and freedom. It's also reflected in their perception of sex.
In other people's impressions of hippies' love and sex, there is no doubt that they are wild revelry, luring innocent teenagers. But it's only on the surface. Many years later, some people found that“ Free love made the whole love, marriage, sex, baby package obsolete. Love was no longer limited to one person, you could love anyone you chose. In fact love was something you shared with everyone, not just your sex partners. Love exists to be shared freely. We also discovered the more you share, the more you get! So why reserve your love for a select few? ” ( Stone, 1999 )
At that time, people only saw the surface of hippie movement and did not understand the real meaning of hippie movement. There is a good saying, “don't be confused by the surface phenomenon of things.” Just like people's wrong understanding of hippies is exactly the same, so don't see the surface of a thing and jump to conclusions, so sometimes things will go against their wishes.
