Hearing is one of the five senses humans have. Hearing can take you to many places unexplored to the human nature. Hearing can actually make connections between sight and touch. However, hearing can also make an association of a setting without actually being in the surrounding. This paper will be based on The Sensation Lab a virtual barber shop that makes the brain believe or think that in fact you are in a barber shop just by listening to it. This paper will provide a description of where the people are located based on the recording. This paper will also describe how sensation and transduction can help people complete an action or behavior as well as how sensory adaptation is used in an accommodated conversation.

Location of people and how it was identified

The location of the people is at a barber shop. However, from the audio and sound effects you can also conclude that the barber shop is located in a house, apartment or building complex. This is based on the sounds made at the beginning of the audio when they knocked on the door to call the barber. The flow of the audio can also trick your brain to think that in fact you are the one getting a haircut. The description of the audio of how someone gets to the barber shop, how they wait for their barber to arrive and how the barber starts talking to you is actually in fact the process people go through when getting a haircut. The sound effects of the cutting scissors as well as the electric clippers can make your skin tingle because you feel as if the scissors are around your ears cutting your hair and the blade making the final haircut touches. This sensation is called the Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, this sensation happens when people "experience a tingling static-like sensation across the scalp" (Barrat and Davis, 2015 pg. 1) in the rear of the neck and in fact many occasions is to a precise reaction of audio or visual stimuli. This can also happen because the human brain is molded not only by genetic factors but also by experiences (Myers, 2016). In this case since getting a haircut is a common thing people do the sounds and the flow of the audio makes you believe you are the one getting the haircut because your brain is making the connection with your own personal experiences.

Sensation and transduction

Sensation is referred to the development by which the physical receptors and nervous system receive and gathers stimulus energy from the environment (Myers, 2016). The live camera shows a couple of people trying to cross the intersection. As they were in the middle of the street the red light turned to green. This made them stop in the middle of the street to wait for coming cars to stop so they could cross. Their sensation at this time could had been sensing danger. Their sensation detected immediate danger and when this happened the nervous system communicated to the brain. When this happens this is called transduction. Transduction is the change of one type of energy into another (Myers, 2016). In this case, their sensation perceived danger, because they were in the middle of the street, and cars started moving. Transduction converted their sensation to fear and the brains perception was to stop immediately to avoid getting hit. The brain receptors kept guiding the people of when to stop and when to walk until they reached the street.

Sensory adaptation

Sitting in a park trying to have a conversation while children are playing and laughing can be a challenge to many. However, as time goes by and you continue with the conversation you can kind of even say that you forgot that children were even there. This happens because of sensory adaptation. Sensory adaptation is when a person is constantly exposed to the same type of setting and they become less aware of it (Myers, 2016). To adapt to this situation I basically ignored the children that were playing and continued having the conversation. I stayed in the same bench and continued as if nothing before I knew it had forgotten that my surroundings had children laughing and even the purpose of why I was there.

Conclusion

This paper focused on hearing the sense that can make humans remember memories based on experiences just by sounds. This paper also explained how sensation and transduction can help people react in a certain environment. Moreover, this paper also talked about sensory adaptation and how sensory adaptation helped me ignore my surroundings and helped me continue the task I was there to do.
