Social Anxiety Disorder is usually treated by either psychotherapy or various types of psychiatric medications. In this discussion i will discuss treatments of social anxiety, along with research to support it. When treating SAD it is very important that a person speaks to their primary doctor. A doctor will administer an exam, usually in the form of a questionaire to learn morre about your medical history. Once this is completed your doctor may refer you to a mental health professional. This may be a counselor, therapist, or a psychologist. The first step to effective treatment is to have a diagnosis made, usually by a mental health specialist. After researching i found that the best way to treat this disorder is through cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or medication. In some cases mental professionalshave used both CBT and medication to treat an individual. The botttomline of therapy is to build skills, to help you handle a disorder, and feel confident within yourself. Teamwork is important during this time, because it is important a therapist or in this case a psychologist is able to understand a patients needs, and the patient and client can both tackle this disorder togther. There are different ways of building skills during therpy sessions, skill building may include public speaking, role playing, and in some cases therapist may expose their patients to social environment as a positive way of learning how to navigate around strangers. Ulitimately this Psychotherapy wil improve our way of living, and minimize symptomsof social anxiety.
Cognitive behavioral therapy is used in today’s society, and it is very effective in treating SAD. In exposure-based cognitive behavioral therapy, you gradually work up to facing the situations you fear most. In a case study that I found online, George is diagnosed with SAD, he is then givin 20 specialized individual sessions. These sessions were tailored spcefically to George, and each sessions addressed problems geroge was facing. Through CBT, and communicating effectively with his therapist, george was able to lower his anxiety levels. As a result, his anxiety scores on the The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and the social phobia and anxiety inventory (SPAI) supported the result in these sessions. According to the study, even after a few months geroges anxiety levels were still low, and he is now able to maintain himself in social situations.
Doctors also use antidepressant medications to treat this disorder. For instance, he may prescribe drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). This includes Fluoxetine (Prozac), Paroxetine (Paxil), and Sertraline (Zoloft). Your doctor may also choose other antidepressants depending on a persons reaction and symptons to antidepressants. Other antidepressants include beta blockers and benzodiazepine medications. These drugs are very powerful and are used to treat many other disorders such as ocd, anxiety, and depression. These drugs are effective bcause they can modify serotonin in our brains. Serotonin is what calms us down, slow down or heartbeats, and bring pulse back to normal.
Problems with our serotonin levels can cause sleep loss, loss of appetitie, and problems with social behavior repesctively. Beta blockers work by blocking andrenaline in our body by causing us to feel calm thorughout our bodies. Although they are not recommened to be used daily or for a long period of time. You may take beta blockers when needed, to help control symptoms in social situations. While both psychotherapy and medications have been shown to be effective in the treatment of social anxiety disorder. A combination approach of therapy, treatment, and self help may be the most beneficial. Many people have found that helping themself can reduce a lot of feelings and symptoms. But it is advised that real professional treatment is the only way that you can overcome this order.
Self help techniques, include breathing exercises, positive thoughts, and practicing taking baby steps to overcome the disorder. Self techniques only help temporarily, and may reduce anxiety levels briefly. When you are diagnosed with SAD, the best treatment is to seek a professional who specialize in the disorder, you want to overcome. Keep in mind that medicination is very helpful, and we use it a lot for many diseases and disorders. But it can be addicting, and we can grow a tolerance, and it may not be effective any longer. Some people are able to cut themselves off the medication once they do not need it any longer, or others may have to take the medication for the remainder of theirlives.
No matter the various treatment choice, the initial course of treatment will reduce anxiety, and taking the first step towards the journey of recovery, will help you acheieve a less stressful life.
