My Opinion on the Storyline
In my opinion, the storyline of The Fault In Our Stars is really interesting and original. This was the first book I read in which the main character was suffering from a disease. In my opinion, the plot structure was good as well, first, we got to meet the main character, Hazel. After we met her the story slowly began, it first talked about her life while having cancer and what she does on a daily. The story slowly got more interesting. The book is really emotional and I had to cry a few times while reading it, it is a pretty tragic story. I think what made it emotional was to see the love between two people even though they both were or still are very ill, and can die soon. The saddest part, in my opinion, was when Augustus died. I found it really sad because he and Hazel were really happy together and they had a very special bond.
Characters and Their Development
The main character in the story is Hazel, she is a sixteen-year-old teenage girl and suffers from cancer. She is really shy and not social at all if you’d let her she’d stay inside the whole day long. She really likes reading, her favorite author is Peter Van Houten. At the beginning of the book, she is very shy and doesn’t like making contact with new people and making friends, in the end, she has become more social and she is more outgoing. The second main character is Augustus, he is 17 years old, he and Hazel meet at the support group Hazel have to attend, and they become really close. After a while, Augustus and Hazel get a relationship. The sad part is when Augustus gets cancer again, he had cancer when he was younger but it was cured. In the end, Augustus dies. His character doesn’t develop other than that he becomes more silent and he doesn’t have much energy left at the end.
The Main Theme
The main theme of the book is romance because it is about Hazel and Augustus, and how their friendship develops into a relationship. It also shows us the relationship between two people who have a serious disease and can die anytime soon. Hazel and Augustus meet one day at the support group Hazel’s mom made Hazel go. Augustus was there that day to support his friend who’d have surgery soon and would be blind after the surgery. Hazel sees Augustus staring at her the whole time. After the support group, they go to Augustus’s house to watch a movie. They become really close. After a while, they get into a relationship. Reading this book makes you very emotional because Augustus dies at the end, and it is really heartbreaking to read how hard it is for Hazel because he was her first boyfriend.
Suitability
In my opinion, The Fault In Our Stars is suitable for people of my age. I don’t think it is a book children should read because it is very serious and I don’t think young children will like this topic. The book is written on a nice reading level if you don’t like emotional books I would pass on this one because it deals with lots of emotional stuff, for example, losing a loved one. In conclusion, I would recommend this book and I think it is suitable for people of my age.
