American Literature and Aging in Rip Van Winkle
One of the most important population is the elderly. They contribute to the economy of any nation. The past few decades the elderly have faced many challenges in terms of medical or how they are viewed by the society. Some view them as the less privileged. In the 20th century the aged have been given privileges such as medical cover that will help them in their daily lives. In the past decade they faced a lot of challenges in terms of medical. The perspective of the elderly had significantly changed the medical practice in the 19th century (Gizicki-Neundlinger, Gringrich, Güldner, Krausmann, & Tello,2017). Life expectancy had been expected to increase considerably in the late nineteenth century, but as the number of older people increased, the social and cultural meanings of aging had also changed. Many cohorts of the elderly were likely to have different age experiences because of their lives. The main aim of this paper is to provide an overview of how the elderly were viewed and also link it to the book rip van winkle themes of freedom vs tyranny. The paper also discusses the historical changes from decades to decades. During the first three decades of the century, the concept of age was broadly defined and the elderly (not the physicians) were the main source of description of the old qualities. In the third and fourth decades of the century, the idea of aging began to receive more and more negative connotations, but the chronological age itself did not indicate the onset of old age.
However, at the end of the 1930s and 1940s, the age was a special medical and social problem for professionals, and the older people became aware of, and creating different groups. This article shows an American conception of aging in and out of medical profession and shows ways in which age can continue to change and affect the way doctors treat their elderly patients in the future. In the first decades of the 20th century, articles were common to inform popular journalists about aging. During this period, the most popular article on this topic was written by older people and aging was discussed about defining older people in the future. In the 1940s, however, the most popular age records were altered in academic intervention reports in old age.
The most common article on quarantine was the spread of specialized hospitals for aging diseases. As the author described, geriatrics, in contrast to children of pediatrics, is a branch of medicine that is important to the growth of a large number of American people(Chong & Simma Chiang, 2018). At the time, the most famous text was the issue of medical and professional intervention rather than a way of describing the lives of people or their position in the nation. The age seems to be a biological phase of life. People are getting older, although the prospects for human life have increased in the last century. Although the biological characteristics of aging can be predictable, the importance of aging for everyone in society is a reality. In addition, the older people had several historical periods which created their appearance. One way to continue the shifting of older views in time is to look at many books. Popular publications are a good source of public opinion because in the Americans the twentieth century had a unique access to cultural products produced by a large number of national publications, the best distribution of books, advertising and propaganda. The concept of age in the popular American culture has changed considerably during the last century and this change shows that there is probably more changes.
In the last century, doctors told the story of old age in terms of future medical measures, ‘but doctors did not begin to improve the general authority until the beginning of the 20th century.’ And that did not begin to govern public opinion about the aging of thirty. ‘At the end of the nineteenth century earlier, many people were looking for information on health and disease in popular sources’ and ‘people’ themselves. People were considered to be the most important sources of information about age, health and extension of life. These older people were not a group of confidence or a known number, and there was no age. What can be considered as old, because other high-level experts hold this role? In the 1910 and 1920s; there were many products and services that people avoid holes in the elderly. An example of opportunities for people to extend their lifetime was based on the Life Extension Institute (LEI) in 1914, an organization designed to help entrepreneurs and some workers live longer and pro-long their lives.
Because the various concerns the business life and close relationships with the life insurance industry, LEI has dedicated men of all ages the opportunity to extend their life through simple health principles. Paul called for an annual physical examination to investigate the disease early and develop social care practices. While this may seem normal now, LEI carried out health tests when a few doctors regularly treat patients with epidemics. Other available option especially for men is likely to rejuvenation surgery. Many surgeons and endocrinologists in the 1920s, including genes and Harry Benjamin, and allegedly be able to change the behavior of aging in humans and renew vitality and human excitement and simple surgery. ‘Surgery procedures, these rejuvenation clearly described negative. Through rejuvenated ways, science was presented: between 10 and 53 of older people use power and ability to maintain business or sex skills indefinitely and prevent breakdown, although the real wing of medical profession ultimately convicted these actors ‘, the rejuvenation talk The fame of the most famous of the twentieth century. There is no freedom when Americans were under British rule, the only way to comfort them was to lie.
Freedom Theme in Rip Van Winkle
One theme with ‘Rip Van Winkle’ is freedom. Freedom is the ability to do, say and think what you want, without anyone telling you how to do these things. Freedom can be seen in different ways in history. First, Rip is released by his wife when he wakes up and discovers that he is dead. Before going to the mountains and taking a nap, Rip’s wife is always worried about her work (Shawki, and Harris, 2017). Rip also eliminates the work that his wife wanted to do. Now that he is older and his wife did not stay, Rip no longer has the responsibility he had. Another way to show the theme of freedom in this story is the freedom enjoyed by the American people after the War of Independence in England. Before Rip-Nap, Americans are settlers under English rule. When Rip wakes up, he realizes that people went to war with England and won the right to become their own country with their own government.
“Rip Van Winkle ‘examines the different types of tyrannical power: the tyranny of marriage, the tyranny of daily duties, and the most literal tyranny of King George III of England on his American affairs, our freedom and the question of tyranny, which is a’ tyrant ‘and really what it seems to the United States and its citizens. Irving evokes the problem of freedom from tyranny throughout history. Rip Van Winkle seeks nothing more than the freedom to be his gentle and simple person and live the idle life he wants to live. Their freedom and good nature make them desirable for the villagers who like to help and spend time. Rip’s determination to be free and do what he wants never changes.
Various types of tyranny affect Rip to limit his freedom. The most obvious tyrannical force is his wife, who torments him steadily and violently to work on his farm and feed his family. Lady Van Winkle ‘constantly feeds her ears through laziness, neglect and destruction to her family.’ Lady Van Winkle represents tyranny at home. Rip is plagued by his fierce accusation of ‘despair’, but never succumbs. He believes that the company’s request to work with earnings or money is another type of tyranny. Instead, he escapes the two forms of tyranny, avoiding the presence of his wife. He prefers to sit with his friends, talk on the Hudson River or hunt in the Catskill Mountains. Irving notes that responsibility is itself a kind of tyranny because it is forced to do a job it does not like. However, Lady Van Winkle has the right to ask Rip to fulfill her responsibilities as the husband and father of children, described as ‘torn’ and poor because of her laziness.
Rip rarely thinks about politics. Irving mentions that the earliest settlers were the subjects of King George III. They are, but have absolutely nothing to do with your life. While other settlers considered British rule as a tyranny, the characters never refer to it at the beginning of the story. The only time Rip feels the policy as disturbing and impressive is when he returns from his trip to the mountains. He is considered a ‘Tory’ and is almost attacked. In a way, the responsibilities of citizenship, such as support for a political party and a candidate, and the elections are a kind of tyranny for Rip, because they restrict their freedom to live a simple life without political burden. In the end, politics has no importance to him and he seeks only the freedom to be inactive and explain the history of his adventure. In conclusion it is clear that freedom was what the writer was looking for. This is the same as they as how the elderly who were in captive because of lack of proper medication from the hospitals. As times went by the author showed how tranny was one of the problem.
