Abigail Williams and Reverend Hale of The Crucible: The Unjust Characters of the Play

A fictional play, the crucible that happened in 1953, written by Arthur Miller, is about back then Salem people would accuse one another of doing witchcraft. Some of a few main characters in the play were Abigail Williams in which people would accuse her of being one of the witchcraft along with her friends but she all the time would denied everything, John Proctor and Elizabeth Proctor both at the beginning weren’t as close but by the time they got closer their relationship was stronger than the other characters because they cared so much for their lives and from telling the truth as much as possible on the trial. Other characters in the play, played a role in which they were helping out others or proving other such as wrong or right. In the crucible of Arthur Miller the theme is injustice, can sometimes limit people’s freedom.

Firstly, Reverend Hale tried to show care for John Proctor and helping him get saved from being hanged and dying while Danforth didn’t wanted to listen to John Proctor. As to explain, in the play Reverend Hale quickly tells Danforth, “Excellency, it is enough he confess himself. Let him sign it, Let him sign it!” (Miller 141). The quote above states on how Reverend Hale thought it was enough to John to confess and time for John to sign his truth of confession and for Danforth to stop questioning him. Furthermore, this shows that Danforth was limiting John freedom because he was making excuses for John not to being able to sign the paper because he still had doubts that John was lying. As to elaborate, John decided to destroy and rip his signature on his confession because he knew it was gonna destroy his life and reputation of his family. As a quote states, Proctor crying explaining to Danforth “Because it my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!” (Miller 143). As the quote explain on how Proctor from his view point he knew that his name and him can’t be seen as an accused of witchcraft because he knew it would have affected his family name. To explain, John realize giving his confession to the country his name would have been all over the place from mouth to mouth of people making him look bad and his freedom be based on a confession that he knew he would lie to himself. To close up, injustice in John Proctor was a big thing for him because he could held back from his errors and while Danforth would not let him go until he really confess and made his name be given up.

Secondly, Abigail Williams was one to be accused of witchcraft, she then went to trial but after she decides to leave the town and run away to stay away from her being hanged. A quote in the play says, Parris telling Danforth all he knows, “This be the third night. You see sir, she told me she would stay a night with Mercy Lewis. And next day, when she does not return, I send to Mr. Lewis to inquire. Mercy told him she would sleep in my house for a night” (Miller 126). To explain the quote said by Parris is that he tells Judge Danforth that his niece Abigail hasn’t been returned since she told her she was gonna stay over at mercy house just for one night and he now is disappointed in her where she could be or what she could have done. Furthermore, Abigail after what she went to court she knew she needed to leave right away because she had lied about everything as possible she could just for her to get away from dying and everyone making her look bad. As to say, Abigail really would not care for her surrounding around like her family she would only care for her and what she thought will bring her good in her life. Another quote in the play says, Abigail to the girls, “Now look you. All of you. We danced….. Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you. And you know I can do it; I saw Indians smash my dear parents’ heads on the pillow next to mine, and I have seen some reddish work done at night, and I can make you wish you had never seen the sun go down! (Miller 20). As the quote states, on how Abigail threatens the girl and to all agree upon to say the same thing and she threatens them if one of them says what really happens she says she will no matter what but kill them and make them regret what they have done. Furthermore, Abigail doesn’t care who the person is if she really doesn’t know them well or not, if their innocent or not but she will kill them for her to be free at last. To sum up, Abigail shows injustice in her character because she only mind for herself and for her liberty and freedom to be free from all and make people think she has not done anything wrong and she is an innocent girl.

In conclusion, injustice is shown through the crucible play because of how innocent people not only try to get away from being accused of witchcraft because they were sentenced to be hanged for their life and that they had no opportunities to proof the judges and the Salem people that they were innocent, they would not believe in them when they would be telling the truth. People who reality where to be accused of witchcraft they came out to be innocent, they would be free they would give them liberty Salem people back in times really would not look closely to people who should really be accused and not be accused. Many people should question themselves in which they should think twice before doing something and making sure they have rights and proofs of something they want to blame someone because without their will be no sense in which they should blame someone, injustice is always fairness and opposite of justice in life we will all go through something like it but we would always have the strength to prove people wrong and right.
