Some Questions To Kamala Harris
My name is 20985 I am a student who is concerned about cloning. It is my understanding that a bill is being developed to approve both therapeutic and reproductive cloning. Cloning causes suffering to the person or animal being experimented on, this process brings out the worst in humans using their lives like toys. It is completely unethical and inhuman to be used for human advantage. I hope that I can persuade you and inform you about the negative effects of cloning and direct you to make the right decision for the people of California.
Those who support cloning say that it is for medical purposes and will help extend life such as replacing organs or cloning endangered animals to save that species. All though this may seem ideal, most of the time these trials that research these clones fail. Those who support cloning say “This will diminish the waiting list for organ donation and allow more lives to be saved”, but this argument is wrong because “95% of animal cloning has ended in failure due to genetic defects, and cloning is considered unsafe because of it”(Quinonez, 6). Why would scientists proceed to put more lives at risk if there is only a 5% percent chance of surviving? We can compare this to a surgeon who has failed every exam and has a tremor operating on a 5-year-old, would you still want to do it?
To start, one reason why the bill should not pass is that many risks can go wrong when it comes to cloning. For example in the article, Here, Kitty-Kitty-Kitty-Kitty, Kramer says that “most cloning failures occur either in the test tube if the egg and cell fail to develop or shortly after implantation if the embryo is spontaneously aborted”(said, 36). This comes to shows that if something doesn't go wrong the first time there is a lot of space for error in which can permanently damage the clone’s surrogate mother DNA and ability to reproduce or even worse death. If cloning is going to “help” species why is it causing more damage than it's supposed to? Additionally, Kramer also wrote that “ It took 87 tries to produce CC”(Said,37). As shown in the data the process in which cloning beings is very tedious and extreme. The nucleus of both the mother and the unborn clone is being extracted from their bodies. The surrogate mother's eggs genetic material is removed and the unborn clone's genetic material is being combined with the model's DNA this can have much harm done to them and 95% of the time the procedure fails and if it does succeed the clone has many health problems.
Furthermore, these clones won’t receive the quality of life that naturally born organisms possess. Most of these children are going to have under the shadows of there original person they were created from. For instance, in the article “The pros and cons of cloning: is it worth the Risk?” Natasha states that “ Imagine discovering that you are the clone of a child your parents lost you live your life always being compared to the dead child”(Quinonez,6). This could have a serious impact on one's psyche and the way one views life. Living up to expectations that you don’t meet ends up making them feel like a burden, start believing that others are better than him and he is incapable of living to his “parents” want them to be. Additionally, these organisms will age faster and be incapable of living life to the fullest, Natasha states, “...there is a possibility that the age of the donor can be imprinted on the growing embryo”.With this in mind, this can cause premature aging issues and possibly lead to death. How can a scientist be playing the role of god and just letting these animals die, just to better ourselves?
In conclusion, the cloning bill should not be passed because it's a very dangerous procedure where it risks way too many lives causing many problems not only in our state but in our world. As much as cloning could be a huge step in technology and medicine. Research is vitally important before trials and procedures being. Before we take any action and allow this bill to pass we need to think about the success rate and if it is good enough to start on people or animals.
