Literary Devices Used In George Orwell's 1984

Most of the authors in the literary devices intend to pass certain and specific messages to their audience. Majority of them evaluate the happenings in the society. As such, the messages aim at changing the society towards the ability by the people to maintain the good deeds or to shun the bad deeds. This means that many of the people in such societies can relate to the happenings in the plays, novels and art in various ways. This is mainly because the creation of the characters especially in books is done as a representation of the people in the society. In this case, the negative and positive actions represent their good and bad activities. However, at times, writers come up with ideas that are likely to have an influence in the future. This is the case that can be seen in George Orwell’s novel 1984 here Winston is shown to be rebellious against the big brother or the party in order to tone down the nature of the government to have greater control on its people mainly through the ability to believe in their ability to make use of the language for opposition.

The main goal on the 1984 novel by George Orwell is to express the terrible possible effects of totalitarianism. This can be seen from the perspective of the protagonist as created by Orwell to reveal the nightmarish experience that the people are subjected to. Thus, a lot of resonance can be depicted from the 1984 novel by George Orwell. In particular, this book discusses the elements of the revelation about the actions of the NSA by Edward Snowden, the sinister Big Brother that is ever watching the activities of the people, the history that aims at erasing the history about the truth in the ministry where Winston works on the “newspapers, [...] books, periodicals, pamphlets, posters, leaflets, films, sound-tracks, cartoons, photographs” (Orwell, 4) and the disturbing thought of the police, who always have their telescreens. In this case, it reveals the extreme deeds that are exposed to the people. In order for them to survive in this society, they either have to conform or to rebel against the set policies. It is in this case the Winston chooses to rebel against the practices of the Big brother or the party in the effort to end the tendency by the government to engage in the kind of control that involves the use of excessive surveillance, deceit and data mining. However, in the efforts to achieve this, it becomes important to be optimistic on the ability to get certain possibilities through hope unlike in the case of Winston where false hopes and high risks lead to his downfall in rebellion.

As indicated by George Orwell, the objectives of the Part include the need to abolish some of the important elements in the society. These are mainly the things that are valued by the individuals. They include laughter, art, family, pleasure, curiosity and literature. All of these seem to be done in favor of the “boot stamping down on a human face forever” (Orwell 13). Thus, they are means towards the oppression of the people. However, it is not possible for them to take off since the people make use of the language to take control. The events that involve the rebellious activities of Winston in the 1984 novel by George Orwell provide a clear message for the people in that particular society as well as those likely to be in the future to take significant caution regarding certain elements. This is in the way that it offers a prophecy on the manner through which the people in authority can take power to its extreme measures and end up abusing the system. In particular, in the novel, a conclusion is made regarding the way that the protagonists are brainwashed and broken from the way that it describes Winston Smith as “He loved Big Brother” as he weeps into the Victory Gin (Orwell 7). However, this sentence is bitter and not right since it is his efforts that ultimately lead to the defeat of the Big Brother.

It is shown the Winston passionately hated the Big Brother and its activities. It is for this reason that he made a lot of efforts to test the limits of its powers. He makes many personal efforts to resist the tendency by his individuality to stifle. In addition, he also makes use of his ability to apply intellectual reasoning to resistance. It is through this that the oppression and harshness of the Big Brother Party and the institute of the Thought Police is revealed. Although he is depicted as a “recognizably ordinary character” (Orwell 131), this is different from the character of Julia, who is shown not to be troubled and selfish and as such is only interested in the rebellion for the ability to gain her pleasures. The nature of Winston that is stated as fatalism and rebelliousness as is seen in the way that he commits many crimes throughout the story. This can be noticed in his attempt to be “down with the Big Brother” (Orwell 57) as he expresses in his diary (Orwell 4). He also engages with Julia in an illicit affair through which he gets secretly accepted into the anti-Party Brotherhood. In this case, he puts in lots of attempts that help him gain independence and freedom to the extent that he underscores the devastating power exhibited by the Party. It is because of this that at the end on the novel, there is the revelation of the rebellion by Winston as the campaign by O’Brien for psychological and physical torture. This is to the point that he is transformed into a Big Brother loyal subject.

Conclusion

As indicated in the 1984 novel by George Orwell, at times there are those powers in the society that would like to take control of every part of people’s lives. This is in particular to the scenario that was experienced at the time of the Cold war. It is also a reflection of the excessive control that would be placed on the people in the future. Nonetheless, most of the time, they are overly done and cause annoyance to the people. As such, the people only pretend to conform to these requirements. Nonetheless, there are those that are bold enough like Winston Smith in the novel to rebel and to express their diverse views about these practices. This is in the way that they are able to use their languages to disagree with the actions of the governments. In the end, their efforts enable them to defeat these measures to the extent that they bring about liberation to the people.
