The theme of this book is that when you’ve suffered through a loss, interaction is better than isolation. This was shown when she went out to lunch with her mom, when she reunited with her friends after her accident, and when she sees connor again after her trip to Mexico.
To start off with, when you’ve suffered through a loss, interaction is better than isolation is the theme of this book. This is because when Julia took a trip to Mexico to see her extended family, she found herself not thinking about Olga as much. After, she and her mom ate lunch together and not only did their relationship. “ ‘ I can’t remember the last time we ate lunch together.’ I said to my mom. I was very glad to see her again, it made everything with Olga much easier.” This proves that when she saw her extended family and her mom, she started the path to recovering from her great loss. Overall, she found that the more time she spends with her mom, the more the two move on together. Fortunately, Julia kept meeting up with her her friends and family.
To continue with, When Julia cut herself and ended up in the hospital for multiple days, she was surprised by her friends, Lorena and Juanga. “”The feeling of seeing my friends really made me feel a lot better.’ Seeing as she hasn’t communicated with her close friends since before the accident”. This means that when Julia saw her friends for the first time it made her realize that getting over her sister won’t be as hard as she first thought. Julia saw her friends once more, outside her hospital window. They started doing their friendship dance from the corner of a street. Julia started dancing along from inside, and felt so much joy, she almost forgot about her sister’s death for a near second. Basically, Julia realized that all she has to do is spend time with the people she loves, in order to surmount her loss. Luckily, Julia stayed pretty happy until she got out of the hospital.
Lastly, When Julia was sent to the hospital and then Mexico, she couldn’t see her boyfriend, Connor for over a month. But, when the day finally came that she got to see Connor, it felt like a piece of her had been put back; like she was a full person again, not just a girl who lost her sister. Also, when she saw Connor, it was like they had a new bond; like they had fallen in love all over again. “‘It was the best feeling of my life’ Julia exclaimed.” Luckily, Julia managed to stay happy between events instead shutting down again and again.
In conclusion, in the book I am not your perfect Mexican daughter, the theme turns out to be that after you suffer a great loss, interaction is better than isolation. This is because of when she went out to lunch with her mom, after her accident when she saw her friends, and the day she saw Connor after several months of not being in tough at all.
