Poverty and its impact on education has been a debated subject for years. Many researchers have studied the many factors that suggest that this hypothesis or theory is true. It has been proven that there is a correlation between the two. In the article, “Educational Values in Different Social-Economic Status-A Study Case of Six Families in Maros Regency” provides evidence that poverty does affect education. The purpose of this research aims at determining educational values in families by describing the priority of the values selected in the educational value, the role of parents, and the socialization of values that were used by parents in educational values.

This research is a case study with a qualitative approach. The subjects of the research were selected purposively. There were six families with high, medium, and low socioeconomic status. The families were determined by specific criteria. First, the families were nuclear families. Second, the nuclear families occupy their own homes. Third, the nuclear families have a clear socioeconomic status and based on assessment, the families successfully implemented educational value in their family. Primary and secondary data were collected by observation, interviews, and documentation. Interviews were conducted individually. Observations were carried out by observing the daily activities of the interaction between parents and children inside and outside the home. Researchers also observed activities of the parents interacting with their children and the community. Analysis of the data used in this research was descriptive and performed through three activities: namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion and verification. The results showed that families in different socioeconomic status choose religious values as the most important priority value to be implanted in children, followed by academic value, economic value, and social value. Parents in different socioeconomic status think that trying on various aspects of life and living did not give satisfied results without knowing.

Although, this case study provided great data collection methods, I do think that there could have been additional methods used. Questionnaires or surveys, archival records, and physical artifacts could have been included to provide additional support for collecting data to help determine the families’ most important priority value.

Since qualitative research is based on an individual’s opinion there could be threats to the validity of the results, so there’s really not a right or wrong answer. In qualitative research, every piece of data does not have to be analyzed. And when analyzing the results, you must collate the data into a manageable form and construct a narrative around it. Results cannot be extrapolated to fit an entire question and may show only one narrow example but case studies provide more realistic responses than statistical processes. Case studies are not generalized to fit a whole population. The use of propositions is helpful but is not always present. When a case study proposal includes specific propositions it increases the likelihood that the researcher will be able to place limits on the scope of the study and increase the feasibility of completing the project.

In conclusion, based on the results of the case study, I think that families of different socioeconomic status viewed educational value differently. Some families viewed religious value as most important while others had a different view about what was most important.
