The first time I’d ever laid eyes on a homeless person was years ago. I remember feeling a sinking type of pain in my chest, not knowing what it was. This feeling of sorrow and compassion has always been my weakness, and as I handed the poor man a dollar, he smiled at me, eyes tired but heart whole. It made me feel good to know that I’d done a good deed and now, I realize that the emotion that I had felt for that battered old man was pity. This year, I decided to volunteer at the local Global Leadership program making holiday cards, Foothill’s Marching Band Review and San Francisco Youth Outreach. I chose these programs because of my fondness for art, passion for music and love to help those in need.

I believe that everyone needs to feel loved. Handmade cards are a great way to express love for those who don’t normally witness it. For my first volunteering assignment, I volunteered at Global Leadership to handmade holiday cards for the less fortunate and those who do not have families. It was a great way to put my artistic skills to use and share a bit of holiday spirit at the same time.

The next program I volunteered at was for Foothill itself. Being part of the marching band this year was one of the best experiences of my life! The least I could do was help out for our home band review. I spent nearly half the day at Amador (Foothill’s electricity was out) that day, hauling instruments, prepping hospitality food and picking up trash. Although tiring, I felt really proud to be able to support my band. Music has always been one of my greatest passions, I devour notes and tunes.

Lastly, I volunteered at Youth Outreach in San Francisco on Thanksgiving. Youth Outreach is a program amongst many others that provides kids in need with meals and games. I was in charge of face painting, and I was extremely excited to make the kids happy with the beautiful butterflies and animals on their faces. The experience was unreal. All of those little kids racing up to my booth, laughing and pointing to the array of designs made me feel so jubilant. They definitely made my Thanksgiving complete and I hope I did the same for them.

All in all, I am really thankful to have been able to do all of these things for my community. I think that seeing the thanks on other people’s faces has made me realize how much of an influence a single person can have. These few opportunities have created a better version of myself, more caring and patient. I am completely satisfied with my service.
