There was an incident where the hog of Snopes had entered the cornfields. At the last moment, Mr. Harris asked for a dollar for the return of the animal. There is no chronological movement of ‘Girl’. The reader does not find any end, middle, or beginning. The characters of the story ‘Girl’ written by Jamaica Kincaid include the mother and daughter. The mother represents the preadolescent daughter as this is the primary speaker of this story. The mother advises the daughter for teaching the way to run the household and lead a respectable life. The girl was scolded by the mother frequently, other than the wisdom and the reason is the fear of the daughter choosing life or resorting to promiscuous life.

At the same time, the fact indicates that she spends her time sharing the knowledge indicating the care for the girl. The Daughter represents the daughter at the preadolescent stage who pays attention to the speech of the mother. The daughter talks little and shares about defending herself. She talks against the accusation of her mother. She predicts a very bad future. The protest of the girl indicates resentment. Unfortunately, Kincaid never offers original feelings.

In the story, “this is how to behave in the presence of men who don’t know you very well, and this way they won’t recognize immediately the slut I have warning you against becoming.” The line indicates a piece of advice from the mother on the right way of behaving with men. In another line, “you mean to say that after all, you are really going to be the kind of woman who the baker won’t let near the bread?” This line means that the nature of a woman has been indicated here. She talks about the behavior of the baker.

The plot overview of this story is very energetic. “Girl” contains a single phase of advice a mother informs her daughter, only 2 times disturbed by the girl to ask a query or protect herself. She means the guidance to both help her daughter as well as reproach her at the identical time. Kincaid uses semicolons to detach the reprimands as well as words of understanding but frequently repeats herself. Particularly to warn her daughter against flattering a “slut.” Besides these replications, “Girl” does not move forward chronologically: there is no commencement, central, or end to the stream.

The mother distributes much practical as well as supportive advice that will aid her daughter to preserve a house of her own sometimes. She says her daughter how to do such domestic responsibilities as washing, stitching, steaming, cooking, setting the table, sweeping, and coating. The mother also states the girl how to do other belongings she will need to know about. Along with how to make herbal medicines as well as catch a fish. These arguments of sense propose that the women live in a poor, rustic background, where passing on such advice is vital for everyday living.

Together with real advice, the mother also teaches her daughter how to live a satisfying life. She proposes sympathy, like when she talks about the affairs her daughter will one day have with men. She is warning that men, as well as women, occasionally bully each other. She also speaks that there are numerous kinds of dealings as well as some never exercise. The mother also expresses the girl how to perform in dissimilar situations, including how to chat with people she does not like (John and Annie 2017).

Frequently, however, the mother’s guidance appears caustic as well as castigating, out of fear that her daughter is previously well on her method to flattering a slut. She expresses the girl, for instance, not to short while playing marbles, not to sing any Antiguan traditional songs in Sunday institute, and to always pace like a woman. The girl occasionally exclaims to protest her virtue.

As per the author, “Girl” ends with two expressions, “but what if the baker would not let me feel the bread? You mean to express that after all, you’re really going to be the type of woman who the baker would not let near the bread?” These are not just a set of random rules they are a method for Girl to adapt to the values of her culture. Simply it does not be a slut. The conclusion with the periodic theme of sluttishness, the ending ties up the proem. It senses sustaining but it also feels like a cruel technique for the mom to obtain the last word.

On the other hand, in “Barn Burning” written by William Faulkner, we come across Sartoris Snopes, who is a young Colonel. He has a habit of crouching near the store at town court. He is unable to observe the table where his father was sitting. The proof was sought by justice for peace. Mr. Snopes was accused of burning a barn. The fence broke due to the hog of Snopes. Finally, the charges were dismissed by the judge. There was a warning of leaving the county for his well-being. In the story, the characters are Abner Snopes, Colonel Sartoris Snopes, and Lennie Snopes (Egeberg 2018).

The theme of “Barn Burning” reveals that Sartoris should decide to show loyalty towards the family. On the contrary, they might show loyalty to the legal system. This might indicate a moral imperative. The family of Snopes revealed that the father of Sartoris reflects loyalty in the family gets the top value. The family might be present beyond society. It is also beyond the law. The loyalty of the family is their basic moral code. The notions of traditional nature are not judged. Sartoris has been informed by Snopes about the loyalty of “blood.” There might be loneliness. We get a suggestion of the threat on the way of isolation in the family. In a family, the members depend on one another for their safety (Gale 2015).

In the story named “Barn Burning”, we come across a conflicting situation.

The reader comes across blood literally. The intensity seems to be underscored about the family ties. For instance, while Snopes was departing the arranged courthouse at the starting of the story, they come across a boy living in the neighborhood. This boy has blamed Snopes for becoming a barn burner. While Sartoris tries to confront them, Sartoris was hit by the boy. The face became stained with blood. The face was smeared with blood. They had dried and it seemed to solidify as a cake. The name of the family was defended by Sartoris. Snopes had made a plan to ignite the barn. According to Sartoris, the loyalty of the family has been understood. This seems to be costly. There is a lot of burdens. The loyalty of the family has been rejected. The father has been betrayed. The barn is going to be ignited. After the death of Snopes, we have discovered loyalty (Gale 2016).

The mother is a symbol of the impression that females ought to be restricted to the home and that men can ebb without constraint. More significantly, by simply recapping the word slut, the mother protects labeling her daughter in a derogative technique. It can be claimed that this condition re-forms in the daughter the type of judgment against females that the mother has skilled, probably in her younger years. In this method, Jamaica Kincaid’s Girl successfully demonstrates some of the evils of society, and how fathers and mothers could proliferate discrimination through generations.
