One day a man was walking down the streets of his city, headed to the capitol, and then he saw a car wreck right in front of him. His first instinct is to go help, so he rushes over and sees the scene. Now with our government today this is not the case. When we see evil, we are scared of it, such as same-sex marriage, we are scared that outlawing what we know is wrong, is going to offend other people. What’s next going so far from what our founding fathers intended for our government, that most people don’t even know how to define government. In this essay, we will be looking at 2 ways the Bible shows what God’s intended purpose for government is, in the first way, punishing evil, promoting good, the second, we will see how God acknowledged the government in his way.

Punishing Evil, Promoting Good

To start this paragraph let’s look at Romans 13:4, “or he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer.” What does this mean? The government is a servant of God, and according to this verse a servant is supposed to punish evil. But what is punishing evil? Does that mean slay anyone who does not obey God’s commandment? No, it just simply means punish the wrongdoer. If a child disobeys a parent, the parent will spank the child. The child disobeys, his consequence is a spanking. Does that mean the parent hates the child? No, it means that the parent wants him to learn what is right and what is wrong. The government should not and according to the bible is commanded not to, give back evil for evil. (Romans 12: 17-19) Gods time for vengeance is later, its not that God is telling us to forget injustice. God will exercise vengeance now or later, and the government is one of his tools for doing this. The government is filling a 'negative' job when it rebuffs abhorrent. This job includes rebuffing awful conduct so as to secure subjects in their quest for something genuine. For instance, by punishing evil, the governed is securing a resident's very own quest for private property, wellbeing, and life. Conversely, government plays a 'positive' job when it straightforwardly gives something to its subjects—like social insurance or food stamps. Now what is the positive role of government? The bible says in Romans 13:3, “do what is good and you will have praise from the same [authority]” Governments should praise those who do right, rather than doing the good itself.

Jesus acknowledged the government while he was on earth

Let’s go now to the book of Matthew 22:20-22, “and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription? Caesar’s,” they replied. Then he said to them, “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s. When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away” Jesus dismissed the political pathway to initiate his coming kingdom, thus should we. He said his 'kingdom isn't of this world.' He likewise recognized Caesar's place in this world, telling his devotees to 'provide for Caesar what is Caesar's,' while as yet perceiving God as a definitive authority of the universe.

Conclusion

Today we have seen the biblical perspectives on what God’s intended to purpose for government is. Essentially in one sentence, Gods purpose of government is to be in authority on earth to promote good, punish evil, and to keep in control what is happening on the earth. Do you believe the government is doing this? That’s the million-dollar question that keeps coming up. I believe that some countries defiantly don’t uphold this because they repay evil with evil, such as Syria chemically harming their civilian’s, the Rwandan genocide, North Korea’s human rights abuses, what a world we have today.
